    Their pitching depth is not great for immediate help. Gil is already out with Tj surgery from last season, though should be back later this year. Late July/August - surgery was announced May 21 last year though I didnt bother fidning the actual surgery date, so it was probably in June. Will Warren isnt ready, Clayton Beeter might get a shot though he's wild as f*** with nasty stuff. Gomez has only pitched 15 AA innings so probably isnt ready Jhony Brito might soak up some innings but he's nothing special. Deivi Garcia seems to suck If anything, the yankees would probably try to swing a trade to get a SP involving at least 1 of their IF prospects.

    The thing with video replay is, they should be prepared for a possible challenge and have the stuff ready and queued up for the ref to look at and make his decision quickly. It's pretty obvious when a very close possible offside occurs, so have the guys in the replay room be prepared. I think there was a rule update for MLB this year on the replays that with the new pitch clock, Managers have to indicate if they want time to have their team replay room look at the play, they have to hold up their hand or something and they only get 15 seconds now to indicate if they want a challenge. The new wording has to do with the pitch clock, because it won't start until that 15 second window for indicating a challenge is over. Umps apparently have also been instructed to be very strict on this, and wont be allowing managers to put up their "wait for 15 seconds" unless its a really close play since the managers could abuse it to get extra time for their pitchers between pitches.

    The three batter rule for relievers started to address that even though it was more intended to keep game flow going instead of having three pitchers come in to face 1 batter each in whatever inning.

    I think that’s just largely due to timing, not because they don’t actually care. I don’t know how to solve that problem either, the MLB season + spring training + playoffs is just so damn long and pitchers especially would have difficulty altering their routines to make it work. I think it might actually work better at the end of the season rather than the start.

    That's why i dont think there's a realistic shot for a position player to make it, it would require a significant injury or losing a guy like Lopez off the roster, which i really doubt would happen. Lopez is actually a great bench piece with his IF/OF defensive versatility and baserunning. He's about as perfect a bench piece as you can get on the Jays team that clearly values positional flexibility. I can't see a scenario where they DFA a guy like Lopez in favor of any of the other non-roster guys. Could a DFA of a pitcher be done to add another position player? Sure, but that might be a short term thing since I think the jays will always be carrying the max 13 allowable pitchers.

    One of the lefty relievers has a shot, Eisert maybe. I think there's 0 chance of a position player making it out of camp unless there's a series of injuries

    But they can do so now, as long as they declare themsevles eligible prior to the play starting and lineup in an eligible receiving position. At least the theory of the # rules makes some sense in football. There's literally zero reason to mandate #'s in the NHL, MLB, NBA, pro soccer other than " because reasons" To be all militant about the # on a jersey in the MLB and think it has some drastic impact on the sanctity and history of the game is probably evidence of a psychosis forming or having already formed.

    I love that you feel you can speak for what other people care about. Chances are youre somewhat right though, but only that players care more about the team that is signing their checks and don't want to jeopardize their life's work, not that they dont care at all about the WBC. It obviosuly matters to the shitload of MLB players that are playing in it

    Is that the actual reason though? I think it was more for the players, not the refs. Even a lineman can line up as an eligible receiver as long as the formation is legal. And they also made changes to the rule regarding jersey #'s starting in 2021.

    And it's stupid there too. But it wouldnt harm anyone's viewership or enjoyment of the game if next year the NFL started allowing players to wear whatever #'s they wanted regardless of position.

    And then when teams have retired more than 6 numbers? Being hardcore about what series of #'s are allowed on the back of a jersey is really really arbitrary and weird.

    I think it’s just the timing of the event and the less than routine schedule a starter might be experiencing at the WBC vs what they get at ST. Relievers I don’t think it matters as much but the starters get ramped up in a very specific way and I think a lot of them don’t feel like they get that perfect routine at the wbc. Especially this season when they know they’ll need to get used to a pitch clock and limited disengagements and pretty much an entirely different on field flow of the game.

    New rule changes/ updates: Extra inning runner now permanently implemented. Still not going to be used in the Playoffs Position players can’t pitch in a game unless a) it’s extra innings, it’s the 9th inning and your team is up by 10 or more, or c) it’s the 9th inning and your team is down by 8 or more

    I guess Jansen is stuck in the middle of several scenarios that probably make him not all that extension worthy at the moment. #1. Injury history #2. Kirk is friggin awesome, cheaper and under more control already #3. Trying to extend Vlad and/or Manoah would be higher priority I think IF the jays were to approach Jansen, they'd probably want to line up his last year to be the same as Kirk's current last year of control which is the end of 2026. That would be buying 2 FA years after his 2024 Arb 3. so,,, 3 years/32 million ish? call it 7 million for 2024 arb 3 and then 12.5M for 2 more years? Murphy got 15m for his FA years, but I think Murphy might be a bit higher on the catcher tree than Jansen. Maybe not. 3 years 37?
