  1. You accountants need to stop conflating the luxury tax in MLB as being the same as real world accounting. Some principles may be the same but the luxury tax is completely made up and functions only within MLB. The intent of the luxury tax is not the same as the real world.
  2. Yeah, it defeats the entire purpose of the luxury tax. I hope it’s not something that continues like…next season with Soto. It’s a bad precedent
  3. Well here’s the thing, did Ohtani also allow for the Jays to make an offer with deferred money? Or ..did he wait for the offers, pick one and then decide to tell the Dodgers…I pick you and now we’re going to defer a huge chunk of salary to ensure you can still spend elsewhere and avoid luxury tax.
  4. Nah. There was a serious effort to land him, the people reporting signings were more than likely just trying to be “the first guy” to report something and we’re guessing. Whomever it was that suggested Ohtani gave the Dodgers the chance to match any offer …that makes sense. It seems he was always leaning that way but doing his due diligence. The only think that bothers me about the signing is the way the Dodgers are now getting a massive break on the luxury tax. That’s a loophole that shouldn’t exist. The luxury tax penalty should, only be calculated on the 10/700 average, not the deferral stuff. I like the ability to defer salary as an option, it gives lower budget teams a shot at retaining higher end talent rather than losing them or signing upper tier guys (not guys like Ohtani…but star players). Using deferrals to keep actual dollars spent down makes sense. Avoiding luxury tax penalties should not be a factor. The optics and reality of high spending teams deferring money to avoid the luxury tax is pretty low.
  5. JD Martinez for DH. Lee for the OF Yamamoto for SP For trade...target Kim from San Diego. He's not a must-move for Preller but they are looking to get younger and cheaper. They were already talking about players leading up to the Soto trade so could pick up there.
  6. WS betting odds after the Ohtani signing and Soto trade. Dodgers are favorites at +550 Braves +650 Jays, Yankees, Astros, Rangers at +900 Phillies +1000 Orioles +1600 Rays +1800
  7. what about 2nd place in the provincial Remembrance Day poetry competition? Asking for a friend...
  8. K. I believe you. I doubt Steer is even available though. Cinci can just move him to 2b/OF and trade India for the bag of balls he is worth. They wouldn’t likely be looking to trade Steer while he’s still making the minimum and have places for him to play.
  9. didnt you trade Manoah, the non-catcher a second ago? You also forgot about Green and have to DFA like 2 more dudes to make the 40 man roster work
  10. Whomever locked the Ohtani thread when I was about to destroy the fake accountant, you’re a dick.
  11. Because the contract doesn’t end up being 10/700, it’s ends up being like 25/700. That’s the simple way to explain it
  12. The luxury tax in MLB has nothing to do with individual or corporate tax though.
  13. "There was a very vocal crowd cautioning Texas about taking on that contract for a guy with a body type like PF. One thing to live a normal life with that body weight/type, another to perform as a high level professional athlete." Yeah but... the body type for PF had nothing to do with why he had to retire. Yes, it's possible he would have started to drop the next season even if didn't have the neck thing, and IF that happened, the body is likely to have played a role, but it's not as simple as just pointing to a fat guy and stating "everything that goes wrong with you is cuz you're fat and stuff"
  14. Faulty logic. There's plenty of pitchers who arent two way players that have had multiple TJ surgeries. It's unlikely being a two-way guy is much of a factor. The most likely factor is the fact that he throws thousands of baseballs every year as hard as he can in the most unnatural way for a human arm to do it. The few dozen "hard" throws he makes from the OF each season back in Japan isn't even a drop in the arm-stress bucket. Swinging a bat, while does use the same ligaments as pitching isn't even in the same ballpark as far as UCL stress goes.
  15. Gotta be Yamamoto and Lee as plan C? PLan A was Ohtani Plan B was Soto
  16. Even though I can't prove this, I can state with near certainty that yesterday had 0 to do with Ohtani's decision.
  17. Was a gamble that paid off for sure. I wonder how soon before Yamamoto signs there now too
  18. Yeah, he said he wanted to ensure he would stay in one place, and be an advocate on the team to try and recruit other players to sign there.
  19. 10/700 and most of it is being deferred at Ohtani's suggestion. Tells me he was going to the Dodgers regardless, but at least had an open enough mind to check around. Will be interesting to see what the Jays offer was if that ever comes out I never would have guessed 10/700... 12/600, 13/650... yeah I could see those numbers but 10/700 is just an unmatchable number IMO.
  20. I like that Harper is optimistic he can play into his 40s. Boras shouldn't have made that request public though
  21. Mlbtraderumours has now taken the entire post about Ohtani from yesterday down lol
  22. I don't put much stock in stuff like this. I highly doubt the scenario is Harper coming up with an idea to get a longer contract than he has. Chances are, someone asked him a question about where he wants to retire...he said Philly, and then said he'd love to be able to play into his 40s. So Boras then says something like..."Harper wants to play into his 40s and stay in Philly, that would require a longer contract than he currently has." Factual statement Reporter translation to generate clickbait headline "Harper demands extension to remain in Philly until retirement"
  23. the only reason people think there is a delay is because certain baseball reporters keep making s*** up. initial timelines for a decision were reported as "by Sunday" the Morosi did his usual crap, made some s*** up about a decision being "imminent" and made up more s*** about Ohtani being on a plane to Toronto.
  24. What I was hearing on MLB Network and some other places prior to the winter meetings was that there was a budget that included landing Ohtani, and a budget without him. It was implied that the budget with Ohtani still had lots of room for additions, but the one without him was much lower. Probably a " if we don't get Ohtani we aren't gonna go nuts" know kind of deal.
