  1. I'm not certain that his role would change, only his title. It's obvious that Shapiro wants to be the man when it comes to your typical GM duties.
  2. Interesting question posed on the radio. If Rogers starts negotiating with Shapiro in September instead of April or May (presumably), do they still give him the autonomy to make this decision? Do they even hire him?
  3. It seems extremely unlikely that he was 'offered the job'. He was offered a significant demotion with the same title. You always see GM's step down and remain in an advisory role, but we all know they were fired.
  4. I don't say this to criticize the move with AA and Shapiro, but it's hard to imagine any established executive wanting to come here. The couple of times that I have been recruited for jobs, I ask around to see how employees are treated and the answers from Toronto certainly won't be positive. My guess is we get someone inexperienced or someone from within the organization to act as a puppet for contract negotiations and things of that nature.
  5. Bourn basically stayed at his career hitting norms for the first 2 seasons, he just wasn't that good. In hindsight, the defensive metrics in 2012 were probably hugely inflated and they bought in, getting an average defender. He always got poor reads and had an average arm. Swisher I agree with, he just completely lost it right away. It's too bad, I always liked him a lot.
  6. Gibbons should be back on merit, but it's really a coin flip right now. Everyone is on the chopping block when the likely Executive of the Year is demoted/fired.
  7. Swisher/Bourn hurt them a lot too. Had that 100+ million been invested in a couple of reasonably productive players, they probably make the playoffs this season.
  8. By legitimate I just mean that he's seemingly liked by the players, has had success, and is above average when it comes to filling out the lineup card and using the bullpen. Sure there are legit gripes with individual decisions, but there's certainly no glaring reason that he has to be let go right this minute, as you kind of said.
  9. I also think there needs to be some continuity. This guy led the team to a division title and there were basically no legitimate concerns, so there's no urgent need to address the managerial position. If he doesn't repeat the same success next year, then the new GM can look to find his own guy.
  10. Quit calling the Price trade terrible, please. He went 9-1 with a 2.30 ERA in a ton of innings, helping to lead us to the division title. Norris is the cost of a pitcher of his caliber, not egregious at all.
  11. I meant drafting him in the first place, right from the second round.
  12. It's early to do a comprehensive study if I even had the time, but it's just an opinion and I'll explain my logic. We've traded away more prospect capital in the past calendar year than more than half of the leagues have in their top 10 prospects. You're talking 3 top 50 guys (or close), which is rather impressive for a team with a bunch of high picks, let alone one with mostly mediocre ones. Despite that fact, we're still in a fairly strong position with a system in the upper half of the league, though probably not top 10 anymore. That similar type of success is what makes a team like the Cardinals or Giants good.
  13. No, it was Chris Sale. I was also tops on the Kris Bryant bandwagon, but admittedly with some mistakes on the way (Zach Stewart, lol).
  14. I was talking about his drafting track record, not the team as a whole.
  15. Bringing up the 'he didn't draft Mike Trout' argument is total horseshit and you know it. Tony Reagins drafted him, the same guy that traded for Vernon Wells. I won't argue over the semantics of the word elite, but having one of the best drafting front offices gave me comfort that we would be a fairly competitive team on a perpetual basis.
  16. Please no. Keep Gibbons or get someone progressive like Alomar Jr.
  17. There has never been an executive that you couldn't say the same things about. That's the nature of the MLB draft and I don't buy any of this conjecture. The excellent results are there on the whole and that's all I care about.
  18. Yes, a draft is a failure because you miss on a couple of players. Are you going to criticize me if I say Jose Bautista will have a good season in 2016 as well? When you have a track record of being excellent at something, it's perfectly reasonable to expect continued success.
  19. I can't speak for others, but if my job were taken over by another person and I was offered a significant demotion, I would take it as being fired. Don Mattingly wasn't fired by the Dodgers either, but most of us are smart enough to read between the lines.
  20. It's about as likely with AA as it would be with any GM. The track record proves that.
  21. I didn't think what just happened was possible. They basically fired the most admired man in Toronto right now, the reason they had all of this success. Rogers has consistently f***ed up year after year, so you can't put anything past them, including giving a mandate to Shapiro to rebuild.
  22. Before AA rejected his demotion, I thought that we could have focused on both the present and the future. It's not that things can't improve, but it was a given that we would have a great draft in 2016 and would continue to build the farm system as the team competed. Now that's all up in the air.
  23. Keith Law: - Doesn't think Shapiro was hired to replace Anthopoulos, but thinks Rogers expected it. - Notes that Cleveland is a strong process oriented organization, but has not been successful at all. He would have brought in someone from a more successful organization. - Thinks that criticizing Anthopoulos' trade record is way off base and incorrect. All trades this year were huge successes. - Doesn't expect further investment from ownership when it comes to big name pitchers. - Confirms with industry sources that Shapiro was highly critical of AA's trades at the deadline. - Anticipates a possible tear down of the existing roster and thinks that it would be a disastrous decision. - Expects Gibbons to be fired, mentions Eric Wedge. (oh no!)
  24. You're trying to be sarcastic and it's exactly what you said, lol.
