I went through the exact same thing and everyone deals with it differently. That's a life shattering event for a young man. I had the luxury of going through the motions at my job, but I can sympathize with how difficult this must be for him.
He's really got the whole package. He gets himself into good counts and pitchers are too afraid to come into the zone. When he does get into a pitchers count, he shortens up his swing a bit and fouls off all of the good pitches. Even when he does swing at a bad pitch, he usually hits it anyways. That's got to be a nightmare for pitchers.
I love it! I'm very excited to see Gurriel play in the bigs. Looks like Hernandez' audition will continue until JD is back as well.
