  1. I get the feeling that if I had used a similarly talented player over the past 3 years like Joc Pederson or Michael Conforto, then there wouldn't be the same amount of resistance to my projection for his ceiling, but people have always overrated Upton. It's clear to me that the Jays FO went hard after McKinney and will give him a chance. They absolutely love the kind of batted ball profile that he possesses, as you mentioned. I'm excited to see what he can do with the big league team when Granderson leaves.
  2. They have him pretty much in the same tier as Waguespack, which is pretty ridiculous if you ask me.
  3. I'm surprised at how much people hate McKinney. He's 23 and having another good year at AAA. Lots of line drives and lift, just a low BABIP.
  4. I would hope that we do the same thing as we did last offseason. Add veterans at a reasonable cost to fill holes and win as many games as possible. When the young players are ready, give them PT and move the veterans if needed.
  5. 1. Guerrero Jr. 2. Bichette 3. Jansen 4. Alford 5. Pearson 6. Reid-Foley 7. Borucki 8. McKinney 9. Smith 10. Groshans 11. Biggio 12. Paulino 13. Pardinho 14. Perez 15. Zeuch
  6. I'm not buying Wall ahead of McKinney, Biggio, and Smith.
  7. Every time I have seen Giles, he's pumping fastballs down the middle on first pitches and when he falls behind. He's rather predictable and doesn't pitch to the corners very much. Hopefully Russ Martin can help with that.
  8. I'm excited to see what Paulino can do in the rotation and I hope he gets an extended audition this season. I get that he's gone through a PED suspension, but he was the 44th ranked prospect in baseball before 2017 and it seems like he still has the solid stuff and control that helped him to achieve that rank. He could be the real prize in this trade if he shows that the suspension was just a blip on the radar.
  9. I think that Loup could fetch a decent return. Teams are always on the lookout for a lefty reliever at the deadline.
  10. My bad. Fangraphs defaults to the previous 3 years and I thought it was showing his entire career.
  11. Who is this year's Shea Hillenbrand? I wonder if Gibby challenged him to a fight yet.
  12. Roberto Osuna has done that himself, along with at least Bo Schultz and Miguel Castro.
  13. It's so difficult to judge this trade without knowing if there were any specific directives from ownership. If we were forced to deal him then it's not a terrible return. It's obviously not close to what we could get for a blemish free Osuna, but it's better than what the Reds got for Chapman in my opinion. On the other hand, I can't help but think what we could get for him if we let him play out the string and deal him in the offseason or next deadline. History has shown that relievers of Osuna's calibre can net a top ~20 prospect from a contending team. Instead of guys from the bottom half of the Astros top 10 we'd be looking at guys like Jo Adell, Justus Sheffield, Kyle Wright, Alex Verdugo, etc.
  14. If there isn't a blue chip prospect in this deal, then we are seeing an unimaginably high level of stupidity from Shapiro and Atkins. Elite relievers have garnered similarly elite prospects like Clint Frazier and Gleyber Torres recently.
  15. To be clear, I think those types of numbers are attainable if he reaches his potential and the power translates to the big leagues.
  16. I think you guys are really overstating the actual results that Justin Upton has achieved in the last several years. For the record, he's averaged 29 HR per 700 PA with a .268 avg and pretty neutral D. Here's what I said about McKinney: "I still see starter upside in McKinney. The power is for real and he's still putting up a 120 wRC+ in AAA with an unusually low BABIP. He looks to me like a Justin Upton type who can hit 30 bombs with a decent average and make modest contributions on defense." If that kind of upside for McKinney seems ridiculous to you guys then so be it. I'm just not seeing a huge difference from the guy who was a top 100 prospect, outside of some BABIP luck. He's achieved strikingly similar results to Clint Frazier at the same age on the same team outside of BABIP, actually. Very similar K/BB and power numbers with more line drives and flyballs. Fangraphs gives McKinney a better present and future hit tool, with Frazier having better power.
  17. I still see starter upside in McKinney. The power is for real and he's still putting up a 120 wRC+ in AAA with an unusually low BABIP. He looks to me like a Justin Upton type who can hit 30 bombs with a decent average and make modest contributions on defense. As for the low A lottery tickets, I just don't place a ton of value on them unless they are can't miss top 100 guys with off the charts stuff, which Contreras certainly is not. You're talking a good 5 years and maybe more before we see any contributions, not to mention the fact that most of these guys flame out before even reaching AAA. I get the appeal that he could be a 3+ WAR starter someday, but there's just so much risk.
  18. No, I don't remember that. McKinney is a more valuable piece than Contreras in my opinion. If we wanted a high upside arm with zero track record that is 5+ years away, we could have simply traded away an excess reliever to St. Louis for the bonus money.
  19. A 27 year old 1B with no track record of success in the majors is hardly my idea of valuable. Most teams have one of those guys. It's also highly doubtful that they were shopping Gallegos specifically for bonus money. Shreve was the prize for St. Louis, who can't spend the bonus money effectively anyways. Their bullpen has been awful.
  20. Many in this thread were clamouring to have Giovanny Gallegos to be a big part of this trade and the Yankees traded him to St. Louis for very little. We surely could have had him if we were at all interested. I'm curious to see how he does with the Cards.
  21. You seem to be the only person doing that.
  22. A curious fit for Milwaukee. You have to figure that the Orioles would have taken the same offer for Schoop.
  23. Gurriel can't even walk when he gets 4 balls. I bet he knew, but the man just loves to hit.
  24. There's really nothing wrong with an average player. Teams are always looking for average players, especially ones with 4 years of control. Single A pitchers aren't going to do anything for this team for about 5 years so I fail to see why would do that unless the return was far more valuable than Drury. The plan is clearly to build a core around our young studs without becoming a laughing stock like the Orioles. We should all be happy about that.
