Signing a guy like Heyward doesn't hinge on whether you have to give up your 2016 pick or not.

If they were 20 games under .500 and wanted to see if he was capable of playing it to add defensive versatility then I don't see why not.

At first glance, this trade hinges on whether or not Brad Miller is a viable shortstop. SEA has some decent SS depth, and must view Marte as their starter moving forward. TB obviously was going to move a starter. Looks like the Asdrubal Cabrera sweepstakes will be headed elsewhere.

Not really. Taking the QO and trying to cash in next year isn't the worst plan for him. A lot less skepticism surrounding him if he's able to turn in another strong year.

I haven't seen either 7 or 11 used by anybody. I'm pretty sure our own Mark Shapiro is on record saying 9M is the number he uses.

My point was more intended to illustrate that AA didn't necessarily look for a rental from the beginning. If he had been able to land someone with some years of control the perception of his trade deadline would be different. Purely hypothetical obviously, but to think he just said f*** it lets get all the rentals seems a little extreme. -
Heyward isn't built like these guys at all though. I don't really follow your more weight the more stress on your lower half thought? Unless you expect him to turn into Prince Fielder that logic is extremely flawed. 250 and 6'5 is a lot different than 250 and 6'2.

I thought so too. He's probably better than Marco Estrada who looks likely to sign a multi year deal.

Yup. I remember people laughing at Mets fans coming to the board saying that they were hearing they were getting Thor as well. I don't think a single board member actually thought we'd trade them both.

I meant as far as Canadians. It sounds as if lots of Ontario snowbirds head to Florida. I know lots of western Canadians head to Phoenix for winter.

I think you could get a top 100 prospect and a high upside lower level guy for either of them.
