    No, that's just silly. If Austin Wells got the ball so early he could run up the line and make it impossible through distance for Bo to go around or through him and touch the plate - fair game. But he got the ball and then immediately slid his entire body to block and cover the plate. There is nothing about that which stems from "meeting the runner with the tag". He sat down in front of homeplate. These are different tactics. A fielder could still benefit from getting the ball so early by just coming off the bag, removing the bag/plate from the equation. Pickle the runner. Indeed, this is what every fielder but the catcher seems to do, naturally. Because the game doesn't seem to permit blocking second base in the same way it permits blocking off homeplate.

    None of this is very relevant It would be easy to keep all of the baseline obstruction rules as-is and simply add a new rule that for any plays at a base or homeplate the fielder cannot entirely obstruct the base or plate (unless necessary to field the ball, or some caveat like that) Where do you draw the line? The bases! It would be absurd to say that the fielder with ball needs to give the runner a sliding line if there is nothing to slide to.

    Kayfus, DeLauter, and Manzardo emerging around Jose Ramirez and Kwan gives them a chance at a respectable offense. They need to figure out C/SS/2B though. Some horrendous bats up the middle. Maybe Bazzanna and Cooper Ingle.

    Baseline rules already exist, are not problematic, and have nothing to do with what we are talking about, which is plays around the plate / bases where a slide is happening or possible. Nice try

    Most plays that matter are bang-bang and it's hard to even figure out if the ball "beat the runner" The benefit of the ball getting there sooner is the fielder has a much higher chance of making the tag. They don't need other perks. They don't need permission to turn into a brick wall or cement buddha statue on top of the plate just because the ball was early. That's absurd. And there are no positive results for the game for letting that happen. The results are just more injuries and lower scoring.

    100% it was pandering to geezers time to change it now. all fielders must provide a sliding lane to a runner at all times. with or without the ball. it can be beside your leg or between them, but there must be a lane you can shove a foot or hand in.

    He got caught in between decisions I think Went for a normal slide with left leg extended, but saw Wells moving to block the plate entirely and curled his left leg up defensively, on instinct It's was a horrible slide. Would have been better to just try to run through the plate and if you get tagged, whatever. Really, it's revolting that a catcher is even allowed to do that. Other than whiny Jays fans nobody complained about the plate block. It should not be part of the rules for a catcher to receive the ball and then block home plate - and if it is then they should be fair game again!

    Yeah it was weird. When I saw it live I thought he might have broken his tib or fib. Probably force on the tibia downward stretched out his knee ligament(s)? That or maybe it's actually a tendon strain, blunt force on the patella tendon while the knee is bent seems plausible

    He slid like an idiot Knee was bent so his patella ligament was exposed and it went straight into the kneepad of Wells, who was blocking the plate

    Crochet, Chapman, and Whitlock are great but the rest of that Boston staff can be handled. There are a couple of wild cards in Early and Tolle. The Yankees team is much better and deeper offensively and on the pitching side. Fried-Rodon-Schlittler-Warren/Gil is a playoff quality top 4. And I think the Yankees have a deeper pen (even though they have had some hilarious flops and Weaver/Williams are choke artists). "Be careful what you wish for" - shut up mom I want to face Boston.

    A sprained knee ligament IS STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. Sprain means torn or stretched out. These things get lost in communication. What everybody probably means is "there is no structural damage which may require surgery."

    Padres blew it. Didn't need more than 4 innings from Pivetta!!!!!! What are you saving all those elite relievers for?!

    The Padres bullpen is so good that they don't even need 5 IP from any SP. They already have 3 clean from Pivetta. The game is almost over.

    He didn't! They just used Valera instead of his as a pinch hitter. And CJ Kayfus and Naylor, but those decisions aren't as bad. Not sure why he is on the roster then

    that's really cool, I would go to these for $10 if I was in Toronto probably a good chance to bring kids and get autographs and stuff too

    The team just never had viable alternatives for the closer role. Yimi broke. Nance and YRod don't really have the "STUFF" for it. Fluharty was never an option, lefty who throws 90. Little is not a good option, lefty who is too wild. Seranthony is the only one who could maybe slide in there with his Stuff but he's a walks machine. Varland was getting teed off on. He has the stuff for it but hasn't performed. Fisher is a rookie with a hittable fastball. More of a sneaky/tricky guy to be honest. Hopefully in the playoffs they are more aggressive with matchups and stuff. Or yank Hoffman if he doesn't look sharp. Use the lefties and Fisher/Seranthony if matchups dictate and they are still in the pen. Good chance Little/Fisher/Seranthony get burned getting to the 9th inning though. So Hoffman is just the guy left. Not really a glorious thing.

    Big deal because their offense sucks I think he was hurt the last 2.5 months so this is kind of wild but I love it

    bridge too far 5 shockingly bad outings is a lot for a guy and he was awful and lucky for all of September May 8.64 FIP August 7.64 FIP 5.23 xFIP September 5.10 FIP 5.77 xFIP In May you could argue he just got unlucky on homers but then for the last two months he was f***ing brutal and had horrendous K-BB ratio and declining stuff. Honestly quite scary, I think he might have broken.
