    He's stung it a bit more than Mune in Japan. Mune was .080 ISO there and Toritani has been .130. The bar is so low at 2B in Toronto that even if he's just Mune (Steamer -> .240/.306/.310) with "+1" bonuses across the board (.250/.320/.340; so basically, Yunel Escobar), that could be a solid 1-2 win improvement depending largely on the defense. That's essentially 2013 Dustin Ackley who would've been about a 1.5 win player if the M's didn't move him to CF where he bled some runs.

    Yeah that might be the best news out of all this. A window into the FO that sheds some light on Beeston's current role (I'm assuming him and Cito just play connect 4 all day).

    The articles from Japan make it pretty clear that Toritani isn't interested in coming over unless he can be guaranteed a starting gig. I think there's a price where he'd be a great flyer fill in. He really shouldn't cost that much given his age and lack of great tools. I'd give him 1 year and a chance to start out of the gate but I wouldn't give him 3 years. Guys like Nakajima and Nishioka were similar / better hitters in Japan, at younger ages coming over, and they flopped entirely. Doesn't mean much but it's enough for me to think that anything more than a 1 year shot would be dumb.

    But, remember last year. The Jays picked Brian Moran and then immediately flipped him to the Angels for international cap space. That was neat-o. Moran ended up having the TJS in April, lol.

    Pretty surprised that Gilmartin is available... I'd rather have him as my #5 SP than Big Pelf, but I guess it's hard to cut a guy making 5.5M.

    Agreed. Morosi is just plain insufferable. Heyman is a dimwit but sometimes he can be funny, and sometimes he actually breaks stuff.

    Castro for Justin Upton would be a big overpay but maybe the Braves could balance it out somehow. Castro for Souza Jr is more than fair on paper, and because of name value and MLB data, the Cubes could probably get Souza + something else nice (which JFaS suggested yesterday). Signing Melky also makes a lot of sense for the Cubes. Could also just give Baez or Castro LF reps in spring and keep all of your infield depth to cover for the inevitable failure...

    MLB Including RP they have the best overall pitching projection in their division. SP only, pretty much tied with the Cards.

    I think their SP depth and talent is fine as is. I'd trade Castro for an OF. I mean, they have a legit 1-5, lot of names down the list, and they're projected top 8 in SP fWAR with Lester. Lester Arrieta Hammel Hendricks Wada Wood Jackson Turner Doubront Straily Edwards Johnson

    I don't think they can move Johnson after trading Semien. Their 2B depth chart is basically 1. Carlos Sanchez, 2. Nothing. Really, all of their relief arms outside of the 2 they just acquired are pretty bad/mediocre...

    I think the Cubs would probably concede that they'll regret this. Lester was above average but nothing special for the three years prior to 2014.

    Lester picked a pretty good time to have a career year. Career low ERA and a four year high in K%.

    Not much info but he's 33 years old and people seem to think that over here he'd be more of a 2B. Guy hasn't missed a game in 10 years though so he's probably another insane rubber stretchy athlete dude like Ichiro. Every bat out of Asia seems to be left handed. Another recent comp coming over would be Nori Aoki. Aoki was a much better hitter in Japan.

    Comparing his slashlines to Kawasaki in Japan, it looks like Toritani is comfortably a better hitter. His career ISO is about .050 points higher and he's hit double digit homers multiple times, while Mune peaked at 4 knocks. Toritani has been peaking as a guy that walks more than he strikes out. Mune peaked in Japan as a 2:1 K:BB guy. Batting average similar. Mune had more impressive SB totals, ~30 vs ~15. Toritani's career OPS is only 0.060 points higher, but the K/BB might mean that his abilities will translate over a bit better. Kawasaki is a .240/.310/.315 true talent hitter, more or less. If Taratino can hit just .250/.330/.360 or something like that, he could approach being a somewhat average regular assuming he's a good 2B.
