They are basically paying Chapman for 9.5 WAR over 5 years, without factoring in inflation. He's had 2.5+ WAR in 3 straight years, and by the end of this deal, 1 WAR will probably be worth around $11-12M. The people who think this is a dumb contract probably thought the same about the Andrew Miller deal.

He'll probably be worth $100M over the deal even if he starts declining right away. We have seen $/WAR jump almost 50% in the last 3-4 years, inflation is rampant.
