  1. I'm fine with the offer the organization made, and the subsequent decision to move on. I'm fine with EE declining the offer to see what else was out there. I'm fine with him signing a good deal for him with Cleveland. Really, the only thing that irks me is Kinzer going on about how Edwin was disappointed not to be coming back and that Toronto was his first choice. It's either a business decision, or a sentimental decision, and the Edwin camp comes across as trying to play both sides.
  2. I'm trying to think of someone who has lost as much potential earnings as Bautista, based off of timing. If he becomes a free agent with two season of breakout performance instead of one, he probably makes a lot more than 5/$65 million. If he becomes a free agent immediately after the bat flip season, instead of a year later, he probably has no trouble getting a big multi-year deal. One year of free agent timing on either side of his peak years is going to cost him a lot of money. That said, with the Booster Juice money rolling in, he's probably still doing okay.
  3. If only we had $8 million kicking around somewhere... Dammit Smoak.
  4. Was never really able to capitalize on that 2012 momentum.
  5. Could this signing BE any better?
  6. I think that's exactly what he's lamenting, albeit behind the crocodile tears of Edwin not being able to go back to Toronto. I like Edwin and I really do hope that he gets a great deal.
  7. Pretty sure any spacecraft carrying Smoak wouldn't be able to handle the orbital curve required to get to the moon.
  8. I really don't see why an agent should ever be "disappointed" by any front office behaviour. The whole point of an agent is to take feeling/sentiment/emotion out of the equation and make business decisions based on their interpretation of market conditions to get the most money for their player. To date, it seems like Kinzer miscalculated Edwin's market, and turned down what may be the best offer he'll see. If that's the case, his agent should own his error and stop playing the how-were-we-know-they-would-move-on-so-fast card. It's his job to know. Like, his only job.
  9. I don't think anyone feels any hatred toward Edwin. For me it's more the sentimental angle his agent seems to playing now that the team has moved on after offering Edwin a very reasonable deal.
  10. I don't know any southerners, I'm sure they're lovely people. I'm just picturing Kinzer speaking with a Kevin Barker voice and backtracking after realizing he may have messed up Edwin's chance of making gobs of money while playing in his preferred location (assuming that Toronto is his preferred location).
  11. No clue. 4/$68? 3/$55? I think Beltran and Holliday signing for 1 year, and Bautista still available for a shorter term deal hurts Edwin. I think the pick hurts Edwin. There's not even a loyalty/fan/history ("bring him home") factor out there for him other than Toronto. I'm not saying it was unreasonable for him to reject the offer necessarily; just seems like his agent miscalculated how the offseason would unfold for players of Edwin's ilk.
  12. Ooh, now I really want this to blow up in his face.
  13. I don't know if it's as much "chicken" as it is going into the offseason identifying "alternative" paths to constructing next season's roster and associating a likelihood of either happening. Something like, 1. Signing Edwin early at 4/80 and then adding complementary pieces (20%) 2. Signing complementary pieces early and then making a Fowler-esque addition later on (80%) If he signs early at that price great, follow Path 1, otherwise, move onto Path 2.
  14. I think it's really unlikely we get Edwin back at this point. With the Upton/Carrera/Smoak pieces in play (where Smoak presumably gets actual playing time), I think if we can get Fowler, we're pretty much done on the offensive side, save for identifying who backs up Martin.
  15. Also, I've never heard the name Paul Kinzer before 20 minutes ago, but for some reason, I really hope this blows up in his face.
  16. It would be interesting if Shapiro intentionally offered this very reasonable deal during the "quiet period" that Kinzer alludes to, based primarily on the idea that Edwin was likely to reject.
  17. Possibly, but with destinations dwindling and the pick attached, I would guess that's unlikely at this point. I know it's hard to put oneself in Edwin's shoes, but turning down $80 million to play in a city that you love; where you have tremendous fan support; and where the team has been knocking on the door the last couple of seasons; it just seems like a regrettable misstep.
  18. Especially when Pearce is clearly a cog.
  19. I expect them to as well; with an eye on bolstering the roster after the season begins, if need be. A healthy rotation out of the gate may be able to buy us some time to identify where we need to focus in terms of player acquisition. I'm particularly thinking of how Travis performs, as well as Upton/Carrera.
  20. It will be interesting to see how far off from the 4/$80 million he ends up signing for (assuming that was a legit offer).
  21. The value of the deal seems quite nice. What was he projected to go for?
  22. Hmm, if I was really doing it right, I should have broken this post out into multiple comments.
  23. What drivel. You should be clubbed like a baby seal for offering such worthless advice.
  24. Trumbo must have gotten on the Glucosamine Chondroitin at an earlier age than Joe. Pity.
  25. In the context of early signings, I was going to make a Maicer Izturis joke/reference; but I couldn't remember his name, and had to google, "blue jay player second baseman falling up dugout stairs" in order to recall what it was. That sort of killed any joke/reference momentum.
