The Jays should start emulating the Rays by signing Heath Bell and Grant Balfour to shore up their bullpen. -
AA and Gibby are pretty tight and there's no doubt in my mind Gibby has at least some say in roster decisions as well as identifying holes that need to be addressed. Gibby also loves himself a good bullpen so I have no doubt his assessment to AA was that the bullpen was the main reason the Jays didn't make the play-offs. Book it!

I thank you for this. It was my impression that the rotation was at least decent this past season. I was really just pointing out to Chappy that one cannot accuse AA of not trying to address the starting rotation because quite clearly, he's used up quite a bit of resources trying to improve it since the end of the 2012 season. Heck even during the 2012 season when he went out and got Happ.

We can only hope AA is just sending out misinformation to other teams through the media when he talks about the bullpen being so high on his shopping list. We'll see what happens.

I thought the 2013 Jays had a strong bullpen despite a bad rotation? Also, I don't think you can accuse AA of not trying to build a strong rotation. What you can say is that he's failed at it so far. After the 2012 team ended up with a rotation in shambles, he went out and got Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle and R.A. Dickey. Hopefully, he's successful soon enough.

Fix the team's other holes first and foremost. Sign a few cheap hard throwers (like Wagner in 2013). Hope Delabar bounces back. Hope Stilson is healthy. Hope guys like Graveman and Cole become relief options later on in the year.

The problem is that they claim to be in "contend now" mode. I have no problem with building towards the long term. However, as we know, that boat has sailed and hopefully it hasn't sunk. -
I guess they're both "going nowhere", it's just that one is getting more value out of it's trip than the other.

It will be interesting to see if: 1. The rumours that the Dodgers want to slash payroll are true. 2. Friedman finds another Colleti or AA to take on at least one of the bad contracts.

Pretty much agree. I've been saying something similar for a while which is why I don't much fret over AA anymore. Funny thing is, posters who I would guess are big Friedman admirers have taken exception to my indifference towards who the GM is. At the end of the day, it's self-evident that Jays' ownership is content with how their team is being run since the current F/O will continue on.

I agree that "it" starts with ownership. However, Friedman deserves tons of credit as well. Shields was traded in 2012 and Price this past July so these 2 transactions are hardly the reason for their success since they just had their first losing season since 2007. I also don't think "many GMs would do the same if permitted", assuming you mean they'd have the same success as he's had. No doubt the Jays' GM wouldn't be allowed to just trade the team's best players without taking into account what trading them would mean in terms of overall interest in the team. In my mind, case in point was what the Jays did after the 2012 season. That team was in no position to go "all in". In fact, a case could be made that they should've done the opposite of what they did and gone for the full rebuild. However, some owners don't want to put up with 3 or more years of 90+ losses as well as lower attendance and tv ratings.

Won't happen. They'd rather spend this money on 10 teenage international prospects who may make MLB in 7 years. -

Definitely agree on Burns (Andy). I was hoping he'd earn a promotion to AAA last year, but got off to such a slow start that it just didn't happen. However, as you point out, he's supposed to play good D at several positions in the IF and possibly even corner OF. Schimpf is another guy who could end up being a decent depth/back-up guy. We'll see.

I think Burns will be added, no doubt in my mind. Same with Cole and Stilson (unless his injury is really serious). I also suspect Berti will be added since he was sent to the AFL.

Ok, I see. Like others have said, we'll have to wait a bit longer since guys like Bryant, Syndergaard plus a few others could make it next year. Hopefully, Brad Glenn and Ryan Goins have played their last MLB games from the 2009 list.

I also remember reading about AA's involvement in the Bautista trade, but don't care enough to look for the source. You can't expect any GM to make a trade like that one every 5 years. AA has made some other decent trades. He struggled when it came time to start winning. However, the Lawrie, Rasmus, Morrow and Escobar trades weren't too shabby. Re-signing EE after Billy Beane let him go for nothing is a decent move as well. You would think they had completely given up on him after letting him go, but they obviously saw something there to get him back and stop playing him at 3B. I imagine some would be ridiculing him had it been Beane who brought him back and reaped the rewards. This is not to say that AA is a great GM, or a good one for that matter. Just pointing out that he has done some decent things.

McGuire still has a chance to make it as a long reliever. Same way you included Chad Jenkins in your 2009 poll. You failed to include Syndergaard, Nicolino, Wojciechowski and Bryant as well, or at least you didn't highlight their names.

Here's some highlights from the Jays' 2010 draft: Deck McGuire. Aaron Sanchez. Noah Syndergaard. Asher Wojciechowski. Justin Nicolino. Sam Dyson. Sean Nolin. Dalton Pompey. Kris Bryant. Who knows, maybe it was the beginning of better drafting.

For sure. But owners should also be held accountable for not firing these supposedly "incompetent GM's". It's no different than any company, the buck starts and stops at the very top.
