  1. 1 year ago. Jays would have good SP depth if they hadn't made this trade though
  2. People still think that it's not true that AA pursued Anibal Sanchez prior to moving onto pursuing a trade for Jake Peavy and then Josh Johnson. We can assume they pursued other FA targets and were told there was no mutual interest. I really don't know why we shouldn't, other than biases against the guy.
  3. Solid signing with some upside. Reality was always that Jays wouldn't be in on the top FA SP and even if they were interested in them, I doubt interest would be mutual, other than using them to get more money from some other team, like Anibal Sanchez did in 2012. Franchise decided to trade its SP depth in the last year in deals that brought it Donaldson, Price and Tulowitzki so spending some money in a deep FA pool of SP should be expected given how good the position player roster is. Rotation is now solid with Hutchison as #6 SP and there's still hope he can become a 3. People forget that Stroman was out most of last year. Hopefully Sanchez is sent to AA/AAA to work on improving his chances of becoming a decent SP some time during the year and become depth.
  4. You are too focused on the GM position, AA in this instance. Owners or team presidents set visions for franchises and give their GM's mandates. AA's mandate was likely to make the playoffs at all cost, especially being in the last year of his contract and with the president who hired him on his way out. Team's situation isn't as precarious going forward as you make it out to be. Yes, Shapiro has some work to do, but hey, he does have to do something, doesn't he? He could decide to put Donaldson on the trade block and get a haul for him, or at least a young 3b, 2 young depth SP and a top SS prospect. Objectively, AA took over a worse situation.
  5. Cards are great, but just to be a contrarian, didn't they offer Pujols an extension for a rather large sum of $?
  6. Plus, if you believe Shapiro is smart and forward-thinking, why wouldn't you expect him to pull off some good trades, you know like a Gose for Travis, get another Escobar or Morrow or to draft another Pillar, Pompey, Nolin, Graveman or Boyd? What about another Gomes trade? Shapiro DOES have to do something doesn't he? Or do some here think he should just have waltzed into a perfect situation? I'm actually excited to see what he will do with this roster going forward. Maybe he'll get another Kluber or something. Don't people see how lucky we are that Rogers got lucky and didn't hire their first 3 or 4 choices and their 3rd and 4th choice was the very best? Anyway, to each their own I guess.
  7. LaCava is next, Shapiro is taking over a terrible situation here.
  8. Team was also improved during last off season all while lowering payroll, IIRC. Like others, I have confidence in Shapiro going forward, especially because he's the team president and will set the vision for the franchise.
  9. Remember though, 2 years ago, the team was supposed to be s*** by 2015/16 after the farm was emptied and left barren. Nothing is stopping Shapiro from trading Bautista and EE to replenish the farm and have a very good farm team. Also, why didn't freakin' ownership stop AA from trying to send his boss, Beeston, out on a playoff appearance? Can't we just be happy that Rogers's 3rd or 4th choice as team president was the best one?
  10. If team had kept Nolin, Graveman, Norris, Boyd and Hoffman, would some of you be happier with the team? Some would likely be complaining about the MLB roster not being good enough. Or maybe he could trade Donaldson for a package that includes a young 3B, 2 young depth SP and a top SS prospect. This would replenish the farm and add depth to starting rotation. Shapiro is a smart guy, he will use the 30M, or whatever is left of it, to round out a very, very good roster.
  11. Team is in good shape. Previous GM's mandate since 2013 was to send out the previous president with a playoff appearance and acted in such a way. 30M to spend should be enough to round out a very, very good roster.
  12. Both Aaron Sanchez and Marco Estrada were starting pitchers for the Toronto Blue Jays beginning May 5th, 2015 (Estrada's first start) and until Aaron Sanchez was moved to the BP upon his return from the disabled list in July.
  13. Hendriks had some really good numbers in high leverage spots, just not good results. Should we be concerned that Shapiro might not see this? I'm ok with Chavez, of course, as team needs SP, but price doesn't seem right.
  14. I doubt this guy meant to say that Shapiro will sit still. I think he just doubts many FA will sign with Jays. Also, this is already a winning team that is expected contend next year so Shapiro doesn't need to get "what is needed to win". Shapiro will need to make solid moves to replace part of the roster, especially in SP, but it's already a darn good team. Having a winning team with a good payroll will help in sustaining the success. It will definitely help, in terms of seeing out a long-term vision, that Shapiro is the president. Unlike the previous GM's who had the 2 Pauls dictating the franchise's long term plans.
  15. If the Jays aren't able to attract FA with this tremendous team, then they have a real problem. Will they offer enough money to have be taken seriously though?
  16. What, you'd rather have Kenny Williams as Team President? You should be celebrating that Rogers's 3rd choice was actually the best choice.
  17. Pompey wasn't a college guy, but definitely lower round.
  18. Question for Shapiro: Do you own socks and do you usually wear them?
  19. I didn't say "we should", I said 'maybe sell high on Pillar'. It doesn't have to be Pillar, in particular, but I think Shapiro will make a couple of trades to improve the team's long-term chances. Maybe it won't be this off season though. We'll see.
  20. Probably not, especially when he'll be a FA after the season. Maybe if they come to an agreement on an extension. I definitely think Shapiro will make a move to restock the farm system this off season. Maybe sell high on Pillar? Good thing is, under him, Cleveland acquired a guy like Kluber so it'll be interesting to follow.
  21. I see what you mean. I meant that both were made by Godfrey and Beeston for PR reasons and that neither should be viewed as a baseball move. I just think those 2 had major influence on how the team was run over the last 15 or so years so I cut both GMs major slack on a lot of things.
  22. Do you really think they couldn't find someone better-suited to run the business side of things of the Toronto Blue Jays than Kenny Williams, Dan Duquette and Mark Shapiro? All 3 guys were former GM's so baseball ops is their background. They were clearly looking for this type of president sort of like the Dodgers, Cubs among others, have done. Why wasn't AA offered a contract after last season? I think the answer is clear, they wanted to change the F/O. Not that there's anything wrong with this, I'm just saying let's count our lucky stars they didn't succeed in getting Kenny Williams.
  23. It's certainly not that I'd rather have Ed Rogers making baseball decisions, it just doesn't seem smart to me to leave people in charge of your company when you have decided to replace them. Maybe it was because of how poorly Rogers handled the search that someone else in the company told him to back off. Who knows really.
