So, I've been tirelessly reading through as many scouting reports on players as possible (that were done right around the time of the draft, which is not possible for all picks). So far, in a small sample size, I found something not too surprising with regards to "character" reports and place of origin (ie. North American vs. European/Former USSR). I read through reports looking for key terms like "leadership", "character", "work ethic", "lazy", etc. Then, ranked them as "Good" for positive words, "Bad" for negative words and "Neutral" for either no words or mixed reports. This is what I've got for 37 picks in the 2003 draft (1st 2 rounds only; not including goaltenders), where 2 = European/USSR and 1 = North American:
So yeah, Europeans were typically given bad "makeup" reports while North Americans were typically given good "makeup" reports, at least from the samples I'm working with. I'm continuing to other drafts, which include: 2002 and 2004 drafts, 2008-13 drafts most of which include TSN reports.
