Penguins had 4 guys on the ice when Kadri scored that goal. Maatta forgot to go onto the ice. Woops! 2-1 Leafs at the break.

Playing with this new site that has heat maps for NHL shots: Link. Just for fun, I looked at the comparison between Kovalchuk and Holmstrom. Boy, is it a joy to watch:
  7. I've been focusing more on hockey stats recently than baseball stats. I guess it's due to the fact that a lot has been done in baseball (though, as Chris has shown with TIPS, still areas left to be explored especially with MiLB data), but hockey is still an undiscovered country relatively speaking. Feels like there's a lot to explore in hockey, at least to me.
  8. I really wish I could offer something for your site, but it seems Chris has it all covered. Well done!
  9. That's bloody awesome man! Congrats!

    Another post on dCorsi.
  11. It will be interesting to see TIPS being used as an evaluator of relief pitching or pitching in general at the start of the season.
  12. Welcome! I really liked your article. I've been trying to convince people that they are looking too much into Stroman's height when determining his future MLB role. Glad his mechanics seem to show he can make it as a starter.
  13. You must be proud! Congrats man!

Rielly scratched for tonight's game for Mark "Cement Legs" Fraser.
  16. Great article and response by Kyle Boddy on the utter lunacy of scouts railing on Stroman (ie. preferring him as a reliever over a starter) mainly due to his height.
  17. Since this is the random non thread-worthy thread, I will like to propose something totally non thread-worthy: Will Matt Kemp become a Blue Jay? More at 11!
  18. I can see it now:

Trade makes sense for both teams. Blacker wasn't going to cut it with the Leafs at D and Holland the same at C. Of course, the Leafs also acquire a facepuncher because... it wouldn't be a Dave Nonis trade without one.
  21. Very interesting study done by Stoltz looking into how much release point variation (the ability to repeat a release point) can affect strike and walk rates. The conclusions are probably obvious to some, but it's interesting to see what effect release point repeatability has on strike rate in numerical form.

That study I linked above could find something in Brown's game that puck possession stats miss, but I'm doubtful. Regardless, what the Sharks are doing is quite amazing. They are mining for Corsi data in junior leagues, even.

San Jose is trying to be that team, though the Mike Brown trade makes me think that their system isn't as refined as the Rays (relatively speaking).
