    So this covers one league min year, all his arb years and one free agent year? Very nice if I'm reading his BBREF page correctly. Deals like this are great for teams like Tampa who have no hopes of affording such a player once he hits free agency. You can now afford to keep him for all 5 years if you want, or trade him for a king's ransom when he has 1.5-2 years left on his contract. (Cost controlled ace level pitchers are kinda hard to come by)

    True. Teams can't use these as comps nor one year arbitration avoiding deals can they... It still feels like teams are getting smarter at trying to find ways to drag down average salaries league wide. (free agent superstar players notwithstanding)

    I'm sure they're doing so rather begrudgingly of course Won 2 World Series titles in St Louis Has been in one playoff series in LA, in which he hit. 167 Watching him chase stats is not what they had in mind I'm sure. One of the worst contracts ever given out.

    Yankees sign Gio Gonzales to a minor league deal Seems like he'll almost certainly get regular starts in April. Earns 3M if he makes the big league roster.

    I like both changes too Just don't put more controls on the actual game on the field. (ie. Enforcing 3 batter minimum, bannig shifts etc)

    Exactly. Got paid 10M because you had an all star season at 25 as an arb-1? Great! Get paid 600k the next year because you had an injury riddled awful season and were on the DL half the year? They would never go for this, and you can't have it both ways. These baseball contracts are guaranteed. There's massive value in that for these players.
