  1. Lots of Canadians doing good things in tennis, and golf is fun ... if you bet on it.
  2. Because ST can only be shortened so much for players to be built up enough to play (especially pitchers). They've clearly decided the shortest is a month (which sounds about right since pitchers usually have about 6 weeks, and only start hitting 5 innings after about 4 weeks with no setbacks).
  3. They have every right to make sure they have at least the same percentage of the pie.
  4. I'm curious if the PA put the proposal to a full vote, would the players actually back up the position they're taking? In other words, do the union reps actually represent the player base?
  5. Sure, why not cancel the opening games. We didn't REALLY want to play the O's anyway. Seriously though, our opening month was absolutely BRUTAL. Missing it could end up being a significant advantage for us.
  6. Interesting. Apparently MLB is trying to get a deal with NBC and Apple for streaming games, which they're hoping to get 150M a year for (most of it from Apple). I believe Sportsnet has about 1/3 the subscribers, but subscriptions costs about three times the amount, as well as the fact that the audience is much more targeted. It's entirely possible that the broadcast rights for SN really is worth 100 to 150M a year to them. On another interesting note, I turned on the TV and reruns of "Married with Children" (how have the reruns not been socially blacklisted by now?) is playing the baseball strike episode lol.
  7. They'd better do something longer than one year on a deal.
  8. Well, I mean you could say the exact same thing about the MLBPA... The best thing that could happen would be for the fans to boycott the same number of games as the ones that are lost. That would send a very, very clear message to both sides for the future. It won't happen though.
  9. Yeah, definitely not. At least news tonight seems to be very positive though.
  10. Yan Gomes played several positions early on too.
  11. Just bring back retired players. We can see things like Barry Bonds face off against Roger Clemens again!
  12. They don't play for free in the playoffs.
  13. I don't understand why the players are against the expanded playoffs anyway. More teams being competitive means more teams willing to pay for free agents and fewer rebuilding, and more playoff games means more money to the players in the playoffs.
  14. Well, this is ugly
  15. Unions are both good and bad. They help ensure a livable wage and good working condition (good), but also make it nearly impossible for companies to fire terrible workers (bad). IMO livable wages should be handled through legislation (in many places they're nowhere close, especially in the States). Raises above that can probably be handled by free market principles. Companies should not be allowed to force employees to sign agreements that prevent them from ever working for a competitor. It should be a union's job to ensure that companies are respecting worker's rights and providing a safe and inclusive working environment, aiding in inter-office disputes, and things like that.
  16. Well, the other money was from real estate development deals I believe. I would consider that in the same vein as a player signing a promotional deal with a company. The point I was making was that the numbers highlighted were probably not typical. The $30M figure was likely much more in line. Sure, some teams like the Yankees and Dodgers are probably much, much higher. Others may not even be viable except for franchise value appreciation. This was actually kind of hinted at by Boras if I remember right (of course, his argument was basically that the increase in franchise valuation should be counted in the revenue calculations).
  17. That's really misleading. If I'm reading it right, the $104M includes $42M not related directly to the team, and also includes money from winning the World Series (which probably added $25 to $30M). Realistically, a great exciting young team with a middle of the pack payroll that had everything go right probably made $30M
  18. He may be a legit 3rd baseman now if he wants to be.
  19. Well, Kodaira was definitely the wrong choice.
  20. In the "I probably should pick different guys" lineup for tomorrow, I'm taking Im, Horschel, Bezuidenhout, Glover, Higgo, and Kodaira
  21. Kind of reminds me of the Disney Black Diamond fiasco. Turned out to be money launderers.
  22. That's true, but expenses for MLB teams have also been skyrocketing. I suspect if you took all the revenue streams, subtracted all the costs teams incur except player payroll, then split the remainder 50/50, player payroll would go down considerably. It's also likely that the move to online streaming will significantly drop the value of some of the TV contracts that have been propping the league up. If MLB really wants to throw the union a cookie though, they should let individual players use and keep 100% of the profit for the advertising patch on their uniforms. Maybe let them do the same with socks and shoes or something too.
  23. Kick him in the knee! (worked for Captain Kirk)
  24. You have no idea how many video games (and consoles) you find at garage sales where the mice in the attic have thoroughly enjoyed the game.
  25. Neither of those things amount to very much money though. It affects what, maybe 5 arbitration players a year? They basically just moved money around. The total values are essentially the same.
