I think it's one of the greatest nuances of baseball. Having essentially 4 different levels (really about 12 but some of the differences are subtle) of players. 25 man with no options, 25 man with options, 40 man not on the 25 man roster and not on the 40 man roster. Managing it is a great skill and managing September call ups to help out a potential playoff team an even greater one. Eventually baseball will probably set a number for increased roster sizes (probably 28 to 30) as no one is using a full 40 man (each call up costs about $65K in salary so it's not insignificant).

Okay trade scenario for me in an auction keeper 5 x 5 roto pool. I am tied for first in HR's, with a 15 HR drop to 3rd. I am 1st in RBI's with again only two guys anywhere near my league. I am 3rd in BA with 4 guys close behind me, and I'm in 4th in runs with only an immediate chance to move up and not down. SB's are not a factor for me. Trade is me trading EE for Goldschmidt. Details are Goldschmidt is a $11 4th year contract which means upon receiving him he's locked in as a keeper for me at a value of $16 and he'll be back in the auction the following year. Edwin is a 3rd year contact $19 which means I could keep him for $24...but that is the last year I could keep him. I can next year trade him in a similar situation to what the other guy is doing with Goldy. Part of me just thinks I can stand pat, go with Edwin and nothing will change. But then the guy deals Goldy to a competitor. ZIPS has Goldy with an edge in every stat except HR's (20 to 18) Should probably also note that it's approximately $800 for 1st and $400 for 2nd. So this year does have some extra weight to it.

Ellis Valentine had the greatest arm I ever remember seeing. In practice he used to put on a show. Similar to Barfield but I don't remember ever seeing either throw one that distance in a game (it's said that no one ran on Valentine). I always say Valentine followed by Barfield and Vlade for best arm...but that's probably my Jays/Expos bias as Parker probably falls somewhere between 1 and 3.

They are similar in that both only have value in playing the OF and can be effective against LHP. I am a big supporter of Pillar as a 4th OF but he has options and is swinging a pitches that he doesn't swing at in the minors. Pillar will be better eventually but Mastro can probably help as much at the given time.

This one makes sense though. Pillar and Mastro are similar enough and this gives them the ability to make a true decision when Rasmus gets back. If Mastro is playing well you can move Gose down. If Gose and Mastro are struggling you can go back to Pillar in 9 days. I still don't see the true value in keeping Rasmus and Gose but it certainly does give us our best defensive options.

that's because this offense is exactly what it was last year. Francisco isn't going to put up 1 WAR months all year. Tolleson isn't a 3 Win player. The offense is pretty much as good as the top 5 hitters go. Edwin isn't going to hit 16 every month. Bautista isn't going to hit over .400 against lefties all year either. This isn't to say that the Jays won't have more of a streak or even win games but the offense the team had in May is not sustainable...nor is the lack of Offense the last week though.

Yet people here rip on those that jumped ship (to an albeit sinking ship itself). At least we don't jump on and off based on hot and cold bats. P.S. it's obvious that the Jays need to sign a Morales type guy as that will energize the pitchers
