To get an idea of the level of play in the Belgium Pro League. I found a few stats. Tom Magrann Catcher with 10 (0 fer) MLB PA's and a .661 MiLB OPS won the leagues triple crown when he played there with .625 avg, 18 HR's in 15 games. Joel McKeon who got 2 years and 54 IP with the ChiSox never lost a game in his three years in Belgium.

The rumour is that the Jays were given free license to spend in 2011 and chose not to. I'm guessing that if they didn't spend it by now and were still getting poor results that AA would be fired. Kind of funny that he did spend and to this point it hasn't worked, but he still has a job (the team increasing it's value probably is a good reason for that).

The whole Escobar situation was handled poorly from the start. What should have happened is that he should have genuinely apologized, The team should have apologized for not noticing it. The rest of the team should have spoke up and said "we noticed it and let Escobar out there with it, we are as much to blame". Whether any of it was true or not it could have been done differently Instead no one had a clue what to say or do and Reyes came out and said things like "this is nothing in our country". As an org (and in no way am I blaming AA here) you don't let a great value guy get run out of town because of a PR disaster in an incident where no laws were broken. I don't advocate what was done but there are professionals that handle these things and they should have been brought in right away and gave everyone a script.

When JFaS gives Kratz that $15M a year value it's obviously not real life as no one is going to give Kratz that value. But also I'm not sure of the exact numbers (maybe he can share) but I believe there were at least 20 other catchers ahead of Kratz (if they were also expand out to 100 or so starts (or whatever number he used for Kratz. The point is that catching is a really important position and having a replacement level or below catcher (once framing is calculated) shouldn't be acceptable to any team. As for Hanigan, he was coveted because of his framing, defense, and his bat was projected to be better than what it was in 2013. I'm just spit-balling numbers here but a team like the Marlins could go with a Catcher platoon of Caleb Joseph (who was very good against lefties in the minors) and Francisco Cervelli (who had a great year against righties, although that can't be expected to repeat). Save like 10M over the next two years and improve their team by about 4 wins each year (this is very estimated numbers I am doing in my head, and don't really have good split estimates on hand)
