    Yet the Brewers turned down the $3M option for Boxberger. Seems so strange.

    I know the Rays want to keep Mead from being a 1B only guy. But learning 3B in the majors is a bad idea. Diaz is horrible but at least he has the range and arm. Last I saw Mead he had neither. It is the Rays and they will move a million guys around and he will get chances but Walls is easily their top defender at 3B, but of course they likely won't get him 400 PAs again unless the bat drasticly improves. I picture Mead as a LF long term.

    Then who do you drop when you sign a free agent? There will probably only be about 10 teams even able to select in the rule 5. I'm not worried about leaving some of the borderline guys. Front offices always seem to know who will get through anyway.

    He can't hit a fastball anymore. Just not a statement a top contender should make unless they think it helps sign Judge. Considering Donaldson is such as ass, I highly doubt that.

    but it's not the norm. It's 25-50% higher than the norm. Pressley got $15M but with options after 2 years. Iglesias $14.5M. Hendricks $13M, Will Smith $13M. I know what you are saying (and Diaz is currently better and younger than these guys were), you have to pay for elite players. But I don't believe there is only one way to build a roster. If 2 years of 37 year old Daniel Bard get you a 2 win upgrade elsewhere. The Mets with a tough to repeat season from Diaz, were the 11th best pen last year. They have just paid $21M and still have a dumpster fire. As a standalone signing it's fine. But man Eppler has a job to do with that team. They could be a 3rd luxury tax threshold team and be worse than last year. At least after next year they get Cano off the books.

    It seems like such a good time for some of these teams to rebuild. Texas should move on from everyone they signed last year and start over. The Giants should stop trying to battle the giants of the NL West and start over. The Twins should be moving on from Correa, Max Kepler and Sonny Gray (both great targets for the Jays). I know it's easier to say as a non owner who doesn't have actual revenue on the line...but purely from a baseball side of things, now is the time.
