I don't think people realize the amount of wear and tear on a players lower body especially paying on turf

162 games a year is hard on the body, turf makes it even worse no doubt. Players just aren't built mentally like they used to. Players played through injury long term. They don't anymore.

The key difference is that teams are far smarter about resting their players when they have minor issues in order to lessen the chances of these developing into more serious issues.

I think that's far more due to the modern game of baseball prioritizing young pitchers chasing higher velocities and spin rates and the resulting stresses on the arm and shoulder.
