Wonder if the Sox will pay up for Montgomery now

I don't think they have a choice if they want to compete.

I think they probably needed Montgomery or Snell to compete - BEFORE the Giolito injury. They were at a 25% chance of making the playoffs before the injury. 6th lowest in the AL.

Red Sox lucky to win 70-75 games with that rotation. Unless they do damage control and sign both Snell & Montgomery.

Votto next to be forced to choose retirement?

Unless he accepts a final bench spot on the Reds and if the Reds would want him back in that kind of role. Otherwise, Toronto's bench is quite full and he never had a desire to play for his home team, so yeah it's either back with the Reds or retire.

Boras was probably on the phone before the MRI results were in to see what they would pay for Montgomery or Snell. Doubt they even entertain that though, they may as well resign themselves to 5th and sign a scrap heap guy like Vince Velasquez

I was thinking Lorenzen might be the guy they target. As far as cheaper stop gap options go, there might be a bit of upside there.

Montgomery's agent Scott Boras told Bob Nightengale of USA Today on Monday that the left-hander is open to signing a short-term contract similar to Matt Chapman and Cody Bellinger.

Analysis

Per Nightengale, Montgomery opened free agency looking for a long-term deal north of $170 million, but it appears he has softened on the idea of a short-term contract with Boras informing teams as much. A short-term deal with the same structure as Chapman and Bellinger would allow Montgomery to bet on himself for one season and re-enter the open market for 2025. He helped the Rangers to a World Series title in 2023 after posting a 3-1 record over six playoff games with a 2.90 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB across 31 innings.

I can't tell if he's getting The Bauer treatment or not. It's been crickets all offseason with him

I feel like he’s black listed. I traded for him and so a bit disappointed with that, but I think it’s the reality

Reading the Sox Forum on this news is entertaining... https://www.talksox.com/forum/threads/20844-Red-Sox-2024-Spring-Training?p=1590378&viewfull=1#post1590378

Best comment right off the hop, I laughed rather violently...

May need surgery and will miss the entire season.

Just when we thought the new shapes of his pitch shaping was really shaping up...

Does this means he won't be opting out next year?

If that's the case, there must be a bad cloud following him. The guy came into work hammered and flipped out, s*** happens. He entered a program and is said to be okay, did he do anything else other than this, Achmed?

He’s got the prior issues dbag, so that was likely it for his 9 lives. So it seems

Jays probably called Bauer.. then Atkins is like “ok, go leak it to the press” and someone told him that’s probably not a good idea.

I could dig something up about Bauer talking to a handful of teams

You think the Jays, as listed, are a legit suitor? Lol

Jays don't have the money, go dig up an article where Bauer has suitors, ya invalid. I've only seen him upset and begging teams to sign him at league minimum.

I remember reading an article months ago, that said Bauer was talking to some teams. I don’t feel the need to prove it to your sorry ass

Minor league deal for Eddie Rosario

I just saw this headline "According to El Extrabase’s Daniel Álvarez-Montes, the Nationals signed OF Eddie Rosario to a split contract in which he could earn up to $4 million with incentives." I've never heard of a "split contract" before. I assume that's just a minor league deal, with an invite to camp and if he makes the team, his $4M is guaranteed? Just some semantics?

It's likely similar to Jay Jackson's contract, basically a 2-Way contract.

His MLB salary is $4M, paid pro-rated for his time in the majors, I believe

Is the difference between Rosario and Lourdes Gurriel 40+M?

To be fair, Rosario does project to be replacement level. Now I wouldn't give Gurriel 3/42 (with an opt out lol) either, but there's probably easily an $8-10M difference in valuation there for 2024. Insane that Gurriel got as much as he did though.

Pretty surprised he projects that poorly actually. Would have guessed like 1-1.5 WAR over most of a season

He was so bad in 2022 (-1.1 WAR) that it probably cancelled out the mediocre 2023 as a bounceback and entering his age 32 season as a poor defensive outfielder whom you'll likely be platooning.
