Guys that split time between 2 positions (even being elite at both…) are often skipped over
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 It's funny that LF/CF players don't get nominated for the utility category Like, is there that much difference between that and being a 3B/SS or whatever

Dubon winning makes sense. Mookie probably should have won in the NL though. Maybe his stats don’t look good on the infield
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 So they should’ve had 4 GGs. Now they just need to sign Inspector Gadget to catch those Royce Lewis HR balls so they can win games scoring 1 run.

Aren’t you supposed to be smart? There’s a huge difference. How many OF errors are there? Most plays are of the routine variety, with only a small % of balls being a max effort/difficult play. IF has two parts to their job, with throws always being part of it. They’re dealing with 100mph+ rips that will differentiate good fielders from bad at a much higher rate than OF
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 This isn't to start another Moreno discussion but Patrick Bailey was absolutely robbed. Luckily it is just an award to keep up the mentions and views in the off-season

Mookie probably should have won in the NL though. Maybe his stats don’t look good on the infield So what is the criteria for the UTIL award? Is it being a good defender that happens to play a couple positions, or is it being a competent defender that can play a bizarre spread of positions? I still don't get what MLB is going for with it. Daulton Varsho was 8th in the AL in Fangraphs defensive value and #1 among qualified outfielders. He seems to be exactly the type of overseen player that the UTIL gold glove was supposed to find and reward.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Could Ha-Seong Kim have won a GG at 2nd base and the utility position?
Marew Verified Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Did varsho get penalized for being a terrible hitter? Is that a thing? Never heard of Steven Kwan but assume he is at least positive ops

Never heard of Steven Kwan but assume he is at least positive ops Brenton Doyle won, so it appears they are no longer penalizing players for being s***** hitters (which they seemingly have in the past). Doyle is one of the worst hitters in recent memory to get 425+ PA's. Great fielder though.
