TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Not a stupid question at all when some posters on here are using Belt's season and comparing him with top bats in Arizona's lineup like Corbin Carroll. So my point that Brandon Belt is just a platoon player and he shouldn't even be used in the same discussion as some other bats. No the man has never had a 138 wRC+ in his career vs LHP (had 130 in 2021 I believe) so it's a stupid question where the answer is obviously no.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Not really, he just proved my point against yours. If Corbin Carroll faced a superior pitcher with a Cutter more often his wRC+ would be considerably lower is also a fact. It's not a winning argument though
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 No the man has never had a 138 wRC+ in his career vs LHP (had 130 in 2021 I believe) so it's a stupid question where the answer is obviously no. I never asked if he would have a 138 wRC+ strictly vs. LHP. I asked if he was playing everyday and hitting vs. LHP as well, would his wRC+ overall have been 138 this season. As well you didn't understand the context I was asking that question. When comparing Arizona and Toronto bats, some posters on here were throwing around Belt's name and his 138 wRC+ as if he were an elite player, when not considering the fact that he was platooning most of the season and only hitting against RHP mainly. I place more value in a player who could play everyday against both RHP and LHP. Carroll and Marte for instance. Belt shouldn't be used in the same conversation.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 If Corbin Carroll faced a superior pitcher with a Cutter more often his wRC+ would be considerably lower is also a fact. It's not a winning argument though My point is that Belt was a platoon bat this season who mainly faced against RHP which is why he had a 138 wRC+ on the season. You can't take that at face value and place him on the same level as Corbin Carroll or Ketel Marte, who both played everyday against both RHP and LHP. If you started Belt against lefties as well, his overall offensive numbers on the season would have been worse.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Lmao he would have led the Jays in HR's this season. Jays lineup could have really used a 30-HR bat. This PS? Dude hasn't hit a f***ing lick, yet?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 This PS? Dude hasn't hit a f***ing lick, yet? Yeah his numbers in the PS have been awful. Misunderstood your post and thought you were referring to his numbers from the regular season.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 What did I say wrong or controversial? Both lineups weren't anything special in 2023. You can debate all day long whether who had a better lineup, the Jays or D'Backs. It's not black and white was all I said. When the Jays lineup is clicking like it was in 2021 (even when you exclude Semien), it definitely is much better. Though that wasn't the case in 2023. Overall the Jays lineup as a whole in 2023 performed poorly and below expectations. It's kind of hilarious how you and others continue to rip on the D'Backs constantly in order to defend the disappointing season the Jays had. You're on an island, man. Stay there....

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Belt is just a platoon bat. Yes he had an outstanding season, but if playing everyday he wouldn't have been as effective. You are entirely missing the point. Belt was technically a platoon bat but had the negative effects of this nearly entirely negated by the construction of his team. He played the overwhelming majority of games when he was available, sitting only about 14% of the time for lefty starters/load management. He faced about 10% of his plate appearances against left handed pitching. Guys like Bo and Vlad only faced left handed pitching in about 18% of their at bats for comparisons sake.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 You're on an island, man. Stay there.... What is wrong in saying that could it be debatable on which lineup is better? Should read my original post and you'll see that it made sense.

Should read my original post and you'll see that it made sense. I'll role with the context, not the ignorance... he's a better bat and does not lose anything as a RHB against MLB pitching? He's a strong side platoon bat? Are you dense.

I'm talking about my main post in response to yours about how it could be debatable on who had a better lineup this season, the Jays or D'Backs. I brought up Belt because some posters on here were mentioning him as if he were on the same level as Carroll or Marte offensively.

Yes he's a platoon bat, not an everyday player. The Jays utilized him very well against RHP only. He only played in 103 games due to his age and injuries, which was expected. I don't think anyone on here expected Belt to play 150 games at his age and given his injury history. Nothing against Belt's season, he was outstanding this year and provided the Jays with excellent value. I just wouldn't consider him in the same class as a Corbin Carroll or Ketel Marte offensively this season.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 I brought up stats that are irrefutable. You tell me? Toronto's bats and offense were better than there's this season, meat. No matter how many times you try and refute this and move the goalposts, you can't change this fact. Please shut up now... Lmao I don't see any stats...
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 My response to your post Jay: It's not black and white. It can be debatable. Blue Jays had more bats with a wRC+ over 100 so yeah they had a deeper lineup, but nobody really had a huge standout year offensively. A lot of Jays bats like KK, Springer, Biggio, Chapman, Jansen and Kirk were pretty much all around 100 wRC+ and had meh numbers offensively. Belt was outstanding, but he was used strictly in a platoon role and only played against RHP. Bo was really the only bat who performed at a high level offensively on a day-to-day basis. Vladdy wasn't that bad as well according to wRC+ but still a huge underperformance for what was expected and could have been better in other areas. D'Backs got an MVP performance from Corbin Carroll and both Ketel Marte and Christian Walker had really strong years offensively. Their top 3 bats were better than the Jays top 3 bats this season offensively IMO. The rest of the D'Backs lineup was meh, but even a player like Gurriel who just had a 106 wRC+ also provided 24 HR's while someone like KK who had a similar wRC+ of 104 just hit 8 HR's and only played against RHP. Overall, both lineups weren't anything special in 2023. D'Backs got better performances from their star players, whereas the star players on the Blue Jays like Vlad and Springer underperformed. If this Blue Jays lineup was hitting like they did in 2021 (even minus Semien), they have a much better lineup. And I'm being attacked for stating this by all you Blue Jays homers. Geez!
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 You really do love just sitting on the sidelines. Is this a quick comment problem, Sil?

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 My response to your post Jay: And I'm being attacked for stating this by all you Blue Jays homers. Geez! Well unfortunately, I'd attack that post twice on Sundays, just saying.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 Is this a quick comment problem, Sil? You love sitting on the sidelines and love instigating arguments between others on this board. You're pretty much rooting for arguments to take place, taking a side and then trash talking the side you disagree with. Like your responses to other posts directed at me.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 Well unfortunately, I'd attack that post twice on Sundays, just saying. So tell me what was wrong with my response to your post? Sure you might disagree but there is no need for you and even posters like Term to overreact and go crazy. This board has really gone down hill over the last year and a half. I never recalled so many posters ever as condescending or treating other well respected posters like idiots when they contribute or add anything to the conversation.
