I always find it amusing to read the yankees reddit thread when we play them and are winning...ran across this. It's not very nice, but I can not tell a lie, it made me laugh. The Yankee fans are getting a bit frustrated with Kirk.

I'd hate for the sanctity of all that is proper in baseball to be destroyed in your eyes, that would be a real travesty. That's totally more important than enjoying a young team who nobody expected to make the playoffs going in scraping and clawing their way in despite missing many key performers for large chunks of the season.

.526 winning percentage converts to 85-86 wins which has a pretty good chance at a wild card spot most years. I mean, the major reason why last year had such a high bar was that the AL had three absurdly bad teams losing well over 100 games.

 

Also, given the remaining three games, 30-27 could easily be 33-27 or 32-28, with the former converting to 89 wins over a full season. A full season that would include a healthy dose of Royals and Tigers match ups.

You're going to hate baseball from this point on because expanded playoffs isn't going anywhere. I like the original idea floated around a few months ago better (14 teams make it, #1 seed in each league get a bye, 3 Wild Card rounds in each league), and maybe they go with that next year, but whatever they end up doing, it's going to lead to more playoff teams every year. Might as well enjoy this one. The 2012-19 version of the playoffs won't be coming back, for many reason$. Or maybe just one.

In the NBA as mentioned, you normally have a clear gap between the 1 and 8 seed and the 5% chance or whatever that the 8 seed has isn’t worth playing the games.

The two playoff teams with the worst records are Jays and Astros. Both have more than a punchers chance to win their respective series. So in that sense, there’s nothing out of place in terms of quality of play/games.

 

So I think gripes in baseball would be more limited to traditionalism, being adverse to “everyone gets a trophy” culture, and principle

If you aren't going to go with the soccer model where the best regular season team wins the championship you might as well give the most amount of teams a chance to win and improve the entertainment level of the product. It may even lead to more teams trying to build a competitive roster which will improve the overall quality and competitiveness of MLB.

Yeah definitely it baseball. I think basketball is dumb with 8 teams and the NFL would be really dumb with 8 teams and the 1 seed playing the 8 seed at home as -18 favorites.

I think the biggest thing to keep in mind is that leagues that don't have any issues rarely make changes. The reason MLB is making so many changes is fairly simple; it needs to attract more/younger fans. The 2020 playoff structure is clearly a revenue grab to compensate for Covid related losses, but in the long run, they need more national TV exposure. They need more fanbases to be engaged during a longer season. They (badly) need attendance to rebound after fans are allowed back in. Expanded playoffs is going to help with some, if not all, of that. It's not about the "purity of the game" anymore. It's about adapting to the current climate.

 

Right now, had the league not implemented the expanded playoffs, the following teams would be out of playoff spots in the AL: Yankees, Jays, Astros. You have the biggest franchise in the entire sport, the biggest villain in the sport, and the Jays (ok, this just benefits us fans, but still). Who the hell wants to see the playoffs with the Rays, 3 Central teams, and the A's battling it out? In hindsight, expanded playoffs saved the AL playoffs this season, assuming the standings remain as they are.

 

We'll all get used to this eventually. Just like we did the initial Wild Card implementation, then the 2nd WC implementation.

Congratulations on hitting an impressive new peak to your rampant self loathing. I assume (maybe mistakenly) that you are a Blue Jays fan, it's remarkable that you would complain about them making the playoffs despite all of the obstacles thrown in their way instead of choosing to enjoy it.

 

This team earned their way in, they are only 2 wins behind the Yankees for crying out loud, and just handed the high spending Yankees a 3 out of 4 game series defeat despite the Yankees coming in extremely hot.
