Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2019 Posted July 9, 2019 Everybody should be battling against each other, not this head to head ********. The format should be like the 3-point shooting contest in the NBA. yeah - that H2H format in the 2nd round was super boring and hard to watch. No excitement at all. I mean who the f*** wanted to watch them each get an extra minute and then 3 more swings (twice!) to break the tie? That was s*** TV right there. H2H competition creates drama and excitement. The time basis | H2H format essentially saved the home run derby. Sometimes that means the wrong guys wins - but that's life.
bronson44 Verified Member Posted July 9, 2019 Posted July 9, 2019 They should factor the distance into it. 1 point for 400ft or less, 2 points for 401-450 and 3 points for anything over 450

I like the concept a lot....just wondering though... Curious how that kind of scoring would've changed results in years gone by. Is the HRD historical data available that shows # of homers and distance of each one? Would really be curious to see if the winners generally remain the same or does everything get thrown completely out of whack? 3 times as many points for bombs seems like a massive advantage for the Aaron Judge's of the world. The Alex Bregman's might as well not even compete. Is that what we're looking for? Just get your hulking sluggers up there trying to do HR for distance cause that's essentially what it would turn into.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2019 Posted July 9, 2019 It would be hard for fans to follow as they hit HR's at such a fast pace. Guys - there's nothing wrong with the current format. It's exciting, must see TV. The HR derby is the best skills competition there is from the 4 major sports. The MLB all-star game is also the best of the 4.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2019 Posted July 9, 2019 312 HR's, Vladito had 91 of them, what a show by Pederson and Guerrero! Would've been nice to see Alonso use his full time slot, he has crazy power too. Nice job by these beasts!

Or were they more urban legend than anything?
Ex Player Verified Member Posted July 9, 2019 Posted July 9, 2019 Do we trust those measurements from a century ago? Or were they more urban legend than anything? Nobody really knows. They did a bunch of different measures and some came closer to 550 feet: https://www.mlb.com/cut4/babe-ruth-s-longest-home-run Either way, thats a long way to hit a ball EDIT: whats also remarkable a lot of his HR's came in the dead-ball era: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead-ball_era
AintNoThang Verified Member Posted July 9, 2019 Posted July 9, 2019 The issue I have with the format is that it basically becomes an endurance competition. Vladdy was gassed at the end. I don't like the fact that players can end the round early if they're hitting second. Why don't they make the final round a minute shorter and for every home run they hit in the first two rounds they get a bonus second? It would push everyone to get as many homers as possible and not have the advantage to rest more than the other. It would reward someone like Vladdy who would have 60+ extra seconds. So Vladdy could get about a half a minute advantage over Alonso. Or Alonso would've been gassed as well trying to hit more in the first few rounds.

If this format would be applied, they should implement that your pitcher can't throw the next pitch until the previous hit ball hits the ground or the seats. This would address the stamina angle and would ensure that none of those kids in the outfield get hurt by a line drive they're not noticing because they're still in the process of chasing down the previously hit ball. A younger kid came close to getting hit last night and that would have been a disaster. You have to figure it's only a matter of "when" not "if" if this isn't addressed. I hate to see anybody, let alone a kid, get hurt like that, but it's pretty much a mathematical certainty.

I know it was in 2015 because I remember people complaining that whoever was throwing to Todd Frazier wasn't waiting until the previous ball landed which is how he ended up beating Donaldson. Or maybe that rule was already removed since then, I don't know.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 They changed it back, I should have clarified. Big mistake imo. Maybe just remove the kids from the OF? While I'm sure it's really fun and awesome for them - they don't add anything to the event and create a safety hazard. Waiting until the ball drops is dumb. Let them throw as quickly as they can. The fans want HR's and the ability for someone to claw back, come from behind and win.
