Big yes to Salazar, no to Teheran.

Salazaar is interesting. I mean he could just be hot garbage because of the injuries. He's missed 2 years. If he somehow bounces back though. I wonder what he signs for.

I wonder what we think about J.D. Martinez. He opted in so that means he couldn't find a better deal elsewhere. His market is reduced to only AL teams. Seems like a bit of a market opportunity if we inquire.

Actually, I guess JDM is basically a rental because he'll opt out next year since he'll have 2/39 left and can probably beat that.

If it really is the Red sox ownership's directive to Chaim to get under the luxury tax, this really puts pressure on them to find some trades.

I was hoping the Red Sox held on to Dombrowski for a few more years, and hated that they replaced him with a Tampa guy, but JD Martinez showing that DD still has some fingerprints in Boston.

JD at 20 mil a season for the next 3 years isn't a bad contract. He was key to their world series as well. I don't think the Martinez signing qualifies as one of Dombrowski's mistakes.

If they have to trade Betts because of it, it is

Yes but they want to cut payroll. JDM opting in means they'll have to trade others (Betts).

I don't think JDM's contract is hideous enough to restrict their ability to trade him. He's coming off a 3.2 WAR season (1 season removed from a 5+ WAR season) and the man can still absolutely MASH the ball.

You have to imagine they will clear payroll however necessary to sign Betts long term.

Hasn't Betts said he is going to FA, I know the Sox will match said offers he receives, but would they risk losing both players. That will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Some of those guys like Odorizzi and Smith should definitely accept the offer

Smith and Abreu are no brainers to accept, Odorizzi and Ozuna might want to try banking multi-year deals, those guys are tough to say. The rest hit FA.

What about Didi? Not sure why the Yankees didn't give him one...

They have depth, but I agree, that's questionable. They might have a multi year deal already in place. *Nudge Nudge, Wink Wink*

Canada got the first upset they need in the WBSC Premier 12, beating Cuba 3-0 in the Group C opener. Phillippe Aumont going 8 in the win. Top 2 in the group qualify for the final 6. Joining Mexico, US, Japan and Chinese Taipei. They have South Korea tomorrow and then Australia on Friday

Torres at SS and DJL at 2B. They don't need Didi, and he'd probably accept.

Nope Final rosters had to be in by October 3rd and for this tourney you have to be National of the country you are representing so Freeman would not be eligible. Not sure Soroka and Freeman would make that much of a difference against South Korea anyway. Making the top 6 is $70k extra to Baseball Canada. Beating out Mexico, Cuba and the States would mean an Olympic bid

What a bunch of nonsense.

GM's talk all the time about this kind of stuff. A suggestion that they 'have an idea of what they're going to do in free agency' is as simple as 'we like the FA market for starting pitchers and think we're going to try and add that way - instead of trading for one of your starting pitchers'

The PA painting this as collusion between teams on the prices they're willing to pay for free agents is a pathetic attempt to mask the reality that valuations for free agents has rightfully dropped.

Agreed. He didn't say anything wrong here and is just doing what GM's do all the time.

The PA is upset that teams are smarter and are less likely to hand out bad contracts. They're also upset that teams take advantage of rules that they've agreed to.

They may specifically hold a grudge against AA even more than many teams because of shrewd but legal moves that may have irked them.

1. Holding Acuna Jr back in his rookie season to avoid counting a service year

2. Waiting out the free agent draft pick compensation window to negotiate a contract with Dallas Keuchel

3. Signing Ozzie Albies to an extremely team friendly contract during his league minimum seasons

They hate all this stuff even though it's all perfectly within a team's rights

Tony Clark is the worst thing to happen to the player's association, and they are not bright enough to realize he's the problem (or at least the biggest one). Literally every CBA hurts the players more and more, and now he's fixating on collusion rather than trying to find a solution to the problem (hint: pay players more in years 0-6).

Australia lost in extras to Cuba. Them winning would have made this a win and in game for sure. Now Canada needs to win and make sure that Cuba doesn't win big against South Korea.

Having an actual player be the Executive Director of the Players Union always seemed like a terrible idea. It's a job meant for Labor Lawyers.

Any true baseball fan with a modicum of legal experience would probably be better than him (i.e. Laika)
