Expos81 Verified Member Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Anyone believe that the current administration down at Rogers Centre is being called into meetings to discuss this ? http://proxy.espn.com/mlb/attendance I believe the Blue Jays were a top 5 team in average attendance for the past 2-3 seasons. This shows they are currently ranked #15. I'd love to have a handle on the year over year comps. That is a huge drop-off ! I have to think that Mark Shapiro's boss is asking questions. If this continues what do you think the impact will be ?
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Meh. Everyone knew there was going to be a drop off after last year but things will pick up a bit when the weather is nice and students are finished school.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Nothing. People show up for a winner. This team is not that. Attendance will continue to decline until the Jays are serious contenders again. Rogers knows this which is why they wouldn't let Shapiro blow it up 2 years ago. But they might have to let him rebuild fully instead of fielding this facade.
Expos81 Verified Member Posted May 19, 2018 Author Posted May 19, 2018 Ha ha ... Spanky ... I have no idea what you're trying to tell me here . It's a funny visual though .

Hey Krylian, I agree that the reason people are not showing up is because they sense this team is not set up to really compete. I'm curious how much rope Rogers gives Shapiro and Atkins before they decide to make changes. Then again , I have heard that Rogers has considered selling the team so perhaps they just leave things as they are as they seek a buyer.

I'm pretty sure Shapiro, Atkins and co... have already mapped out their plan and direction for the future, at least one would hope, lol.

Ahhhhh ... Stone Cold. I get it. Sorry ... a little slow on that one. Yeah , one would hope that they have a 'plan'. I bet they were high fiving each other early in the season when the team was 12-5. Now , not so much. I don't see a turnaround happening with this team this season. That being the case then Rogers Centre will be a mausoleum come August. Then the dog days set in and we talk about next year. The forward looking talk was built around pairing up the 'Now' (Sanchez , Stroman , Osuna ) with the 'Future' (Vladdy , Bichette and Alford ). The 'Now' is looking a little pale right now. Not saying it can't turn around but it does make one pause and think. Oh well ... we must hope.
AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 There isn't much we can do but watch. At least AA left us with Vlad.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Totally expected. Not that much of a financial difference (ticket prices were up). Not Rogers biggest concern. Shapiro also has about 30-50 more staff than what there was 3 years ago. Non issue, non thread
Expos81 Verified Member Posted May 19, 2018 Author Posted May 19, 2018 There isn't much we can do but watch. At least AA left us with Vlad. Very true AledmysDiaz . I like to think of myself as a loyal fan and will continue to support the team but it just sucks when it looks like they won't really make a run for the post season. Again, who knows ... it's only May and things could turn around. But not only did AA leave us with Vlad but I give Shapiro and Atkins credit for not getting greedy and trading away either of Vladdy and Bichette to win now. Here's a question ... if Shapiro and Atkins get pressure from ownership to do something about attendance would they be tempted to bring up the two prospects as a tool to bring people out ?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 I'm pretty sure Shapiro, Atkins and co... have already mapped out their plan and direction for the future, at least one would hope, lol. Probably. Except you're discounting that Rogers could kibosh their "plan" at any given time. Shapiro already admitted he would've blown this up 2 years ago if it wasn't for the attendance at the time. Translation:. Money coming in... Keep it going. Rogers does not provide autonomy. Not with Shapiro, AA, or JP before him. I think it needs to be doused with gasoline and set ablaze, but the guys at the top need to believe it too before they'll allow it.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Since the end of the 2015 season (from Forbes all in USD) Team Valuation $900M to $1.35B (up from 22nd to 16th) Revenue $241M to $271M Gate Receipts $59M to $83M Payroll $136M to $162M Pretty much Gate is less than one third of revenue and as long as the team doesn't get back to 2015 levels there should be little interference. It's a natural cycle for a team.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 what cut do the Jays get when a ticket is sold on StubHub? (that's a revenue stream the club didn't have 3 years ago ... but every team has an agreement with StubHub now)
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 what cut do the Jays get when a ticket is sold on StubHub? CrackerJack Verified Member Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 (edited) Unreported http://thecomeback.com/mlb/investigation-reveals-blue-jays-receive-percentage-of-tickets-resold-on-stubhub.html I find it kinda funny that the CBC & The Star reported that the Jays get a cut of tickets resold on StubHub as some kind of gotcha shocking investigative news. All MLB teams have an arrangement with StubHub. So I imagine that all MLB teams get their cut. The Jays are not unique in this. And the Jays aren't secretive about it. They encourage their season ticket holders to resell on StubHub and make it very easy for them to do so directly from their Blue Jays account online. Edited May 19, 2018 by CrackerJack
Art Vandelay Verified Member Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Lmfao my first thought reading the title as well I first thought of the Rock. But he was the "Smells what's cooking" guy, right? Also, two beers and most of it goes on the floor. Hardly seemed worth the effort.

tercet Verified Member Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 The bottom line is simple, this team was a border-line wild-card before the season, nothing really has changed imo. The band-wagon fans will come if we win, which won't be this year. Now hopefully they can bring back the Jays season pass? (100$ for 81 games!!!)

glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 'Cause Stone Cold Said So was my first thought as well. Shapiro wanted to rebuild two years ago. He knows what's up. This season is a compromise to appease Rogers. Shaps did nothing but sign vets to cheap one year deals and trade little value for inexpensive talent with years of control left. The off season basically was what a rebuilding team would do. If this season goes south, and chances are attendance will drop enough to hurt payroll next season, a rebuild is coming soon. Maybe not scorched earth one, but one nonetheless. But yes, Rogers suddenly wanting to end the rebuild and win right away is always a concern.

They have a 7 person Business and Ticketing analytics team now. Seeing as the concession and liquor sales mean so little to them (it is very low and the contract is up for bid this year but they are miles ahead of where they were last time Aramark won the bid), I bet seat deals like that aren't something they will do again. The only good argument is that when the place is full they have a home advantage on the field. But a seat deal will not put a dent in that. Even when Shapiro was talking about Rogers Centre "fan experience" enhancements, the 500 level was never mentioned. They don't care about the 500 level people unless the place is going to be full.

WryNGinger Verified Member Posted May 20, 2018 Posted May 20, 2018 A lot of TO fans were home watching the Raptors and the Leafs at the beginning of the season as well. I wonder how the attendance has been the last few weeks vs the start of the season.

I wonder how the attendance has been the last few weeks vs the start of the season. Both the Leafs & the Raptors lasted in the playoffs for the same length of time as they did in 2017, so that doesn't account for the drop-off. The Jays simply sold thousands of fewer season tickets and game packs over the winter.
