Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 I posted it, brah just above you. Use your eyes. http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/992/384/ded.gif
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 I was assuming that they'd DFA'd him and announced that they intend to outright him, because there's no way he's had time to clear waivers. Maybe it's different for the period between now and the Rule V? Nah, he's not eligible for the rule 5 according to RosterResource, I believe you're right iniitially, he's still our property. If it were to me, I'd rather protect Romano than Tellez. Yeah, him or Perdomo for sure.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 If it were to me, I'd rather protect Romano than Tellez. Tellez isn't the Tellez you saw last year. Pentecost could be out of baseball in 2 or 3 years.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 A DH/1B with no versatility, no defensive value, coming off a dreadful season where he displayed no power and couldn't hit lefties. I mean I guess it's possible he could have been picked up, but I think more likely Shatkins probably liked him enough to hold on to him. Shatkins shouldn't extent Smoak's contract.
keggy Verified Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 I don't see the point in protecting Tellez. No one was going to take him, and even in the event someone did, the chances of him sticking when his only position is DH was pretty slim. I think protecting him was the right move. The combination of age, upside (depending on which scouts you listen to), and prior success at AA makes him a fringe candidate to contribute at the MLB level in 2018. If he were older or less advanced it's a different story.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Love the decision to protect Conner Greene. I think he has great upside as a reliever (I'm pretty much done with him as a starter).

I wouldn't revert him into a reliever going into his age 23 season, it's likely he becomes one, but I think it's too early for that. Edit: Also, did you see my PM the other day?

Tellez went through a lot of adversity last year. There's still an outside chance he makes the necessary adjustments and rebuilds his value this year with a clear head. 1 year ago, we were all raving at how hard this guy worked and how he was a study of the game. A season like last year will put that to the test - let's see if he's up for it.

Times are changing though and I suspect they are more willing to convert him soon. That said, 2018 is probably a lost season for the Jays, so they may give him more leash as a starter this year.

Sure, but not 2018 soon, he turns 23 in April, far too early.

A season like last year will put that to the test - let's see if he's up for it. Keeping him because they like him and keeping him because they fear someone will take him are two different things. I'm saying they didn't have to fear the latter. History and common sense kind of makes that obvious. I'm sure teams would have taken a chance with Tellez if all they had to do was keep him on the 40 man, but the 25 man roster all season coming off the year he had? No way. Established first baseman with big league success are having trouble getting jobs, you think some team would have started Tellez everyday in the bigs in 2018 or kept him on the roster all season when he can't play a position? Yeah, no. He's young enough to improve so I have no issues keeping him around, I'm just saying the chances of another team taking him were slim, and keeping him all season were even slimmer.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Edit: Also, did you see my PM the other day? I only saw it this morning. I think you're in the lead tbh but I want to take a moment to take it all in. I didn't get (or at least didn't see) any of my pm notifications for some reason.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Please, please, please let this man play in one game this year. I want to see Buck get a seizure trying to say his name. Hopefully he comes in the 8th or 9th when Buck is a few whiskeys in.

Edit: Also, did you see my PM the other day? I'm not saying they convert him to relief right away. If he's not needed in the MLB bullpen, he can keep starting in the minors and see if he catches lightning in a bottle but I think he'll be in the MLB bullpen at some point and that will be that. I don't think he'll ever start at the MLB level.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 no one knows more about Tellez then the Jays front office. the fact they protected him gives us hope.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 no one knows more about Tellez then the Jays front office. the fact they protected him gives us hope. Yeah the attachment to Tellez is ultimately a good sign. They clearly see a lot more in him than what he showed under difficult circumstances this season and they're not the ones who drafted him so it's not like that's a motivator in their attachment.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 Ben: Is Tulo done making any kind of meaningful impact? 9:20 Jeff Zimmerman: Hi everyone. 9:20 Paul Swydan: I think he is, unfortunately. Maybe he has one dead cat bounce season in him. 9:20 Paul Swydan: Hi Jeff!!!! 9:21 Jeff Zimmerman: I think so. Barely play MI and bats not good enough for anywhere else

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2017 Posted November 24, 2017 I was looking at the Rule 5 eligible guys, and two guys jumped out at me, Travis Demeritte(Utility gamble) and Nick Burdi(future closer?), if they're available when we come up I'd hope they take a shot. I doubt they'll be there though. Burdi can be put on the 60 day in the spring... meh, yay or nay?

I'd always advocate for picking a bullpen piece/pitcher in general over a position player in the Rule 5. Way easier to stash a pitcher away on the 25 man rather than a position player since theres more room. Some decent picks available in this Rule 5 actually. Jose Almonte (DBacks, RHP), John Means (Orioles, LHP), Jordan Guerrero (White Sox, LHP), Luis Martinez (White Sox, RHP).

I'll look into the others, remember we have to put these guys on the 25 man roster, just reiterating.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2017 Posted November 25, 2017 Wow, totally forgot Burdi had TJS. Would he still be worth picking? Absolutely. Like I said as soon as ST starts, they can 60 DL him as soon as available.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2017 Posted November 25, 2017 I wonder if we're the other team in on Bryan Shaw? He'd actually be kind of interesting. One of those guys who's velocity is actually increasing, and might be more consistent than any other reliever available. Shapiro is also really familiar with him.

I thought the Jays might of been the 2nd team too but I don't know the Jays have gone years by just looking for reclamation project bullpen pieces.
