jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2017 Author Posted September 15, 2017 Why is Jeremy Jeffress starting? They needed a spot starter. I thought it was a strange choice too. It's going to be a BP game for them.

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 It's a myth that you have to pitch down in the zone to have success. Especially with Osuna's stuff. It should also be noted that due to the "fly ball revolution" more hitters tend to have more power with pitches lower in the zone and struggle with high pitches due to increased uppercuts in their swing.

I think some of the nastiest fastballs I've seen used to be Roger Clemens throwing a relatively straight 98 mph at the letters (and often in). Pitchers today just don't change the batter's eye level anymore, which allows the batter to key in at specific regions.

But he's also got that filthy curveball, so throwing 94 up in the zone usually plays up even more.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 Verlander is one of the best at throwing 4 seams high. A pitch located at the very top of the strike zone is probably tougher to hit than one down in the zone anyway.
