Estrada is 0-4 with a 9.50 ERA over his past eight outings. Control has been a major factor with at least four walks in five consecutive starts and teams have been sitting on his changeup. Expect more curveballs and fastballs.

Bauer did not make it out of the first inning in his last start, as he threw 43 pitches and allowed four runs on three hits with three walks. He is 1-2 with a 6.20 ERA in five career games (four starts) against Toronto.

The Indians' lineup struggled during the team's recent trip out west, but that does not mean manager Terry Francona is going to press the panic button and make any drastic changes to the order. Francona believes in consistency and in the reasoning behind the lineup's alignment.

 

"Believe me, if I thought moving guys would help, I would," Francona said. "I try to put a lineup together that makes sense, or puts guys in the best spot. But other than that, we've got to swing it. If we don't, you can line them up any way you want [and it won't matter]."

 

The American League Central-leading Indians will hope their offensive fortunes turn around on Friday, when the club opens a three-game series against the Blue Jays at Progressive Field. In the opener, Cleveland right-hander Trevor Bauer will take on Toronto righty Marco Estrada in a pairing of last fall's AL Championship Series clubs.

 

In his most recent outing on Sunday, Bauer faced only eight batters before heading to the showers in Oakland. He allowed four runs on three hits with three walks in two-thirds of an inning, forcing the Indians to lean heavily on the bullpen. Cleveland is hoping the outing was a one-start hiccup, given the strides Bauer has made over the past several weeks.

 

"Trevor's been in a pretty good place," Francona said. "We don't want that to derail anything and have him go the other way."

 

Estrada will also be looking to rebound for the Blue Jays after a rough string of starts for the right-hander. Dating back to June 1, Estrada has gone 0-4 with a 9.50 ERA, allowing 38 earned runs on 52 hits in 36 innings. That includes 10 runs surrendered in 8 1/3 innings over his two most recent turns.

 

• Dating back to Bauer's 14-strikeout performance on May 30, the right-hander has thrown his curveball 34.7 percent of the time (up from 22.7 percent in the nine previous starts). In the nine more recent games, Bauer has held batters to a .220 average and a .240 slugging percentage with his curve. Per Statcast, the Blue Jays ranked 27th in average (.190) and 25th in slugging (.305), as of Wednesday.

 

• Over the past three seasons, Estrada has held the Indians to a .143 average and a .143 slugging percentage on at-bats ending with his changeup, per Statcast. One matchup to watch will be Estrada vs. Carlos Santana. In 12 career at-bats, Santana has gone 5-for-12 with two home runs against the righty (1.333 OPS).

 

• With Jason Kipnis (right hamstring) sidelined for at least a couple more weeks, expect to see rookie Bradley Zimmer continue to get at-bats as the Tribe's leadoff man. Francona likes Zimmer at the top due to his elite speed and knack for seeing pitches (4.04 pitches per plate appearance).

These days anyone capable of throwing a ball within 6 inches of the strike zone in any direction owns the Jays
