He would have made a better Jay! Dang and for under 6 mil to boot, f***!

Signing him would make Zeke, Barney, Goins, Cola and maybe even Smoak expendable and as Trade assets for this team!

And saved us 2 or 3 forty man roster spots and money on the payroll too!

Oh well and crap!!!

Seems like a decent deal for the Braves. If the changes to his swing/approach stick, he'll be a steal and a good trade chip.

His versatility would have been a big plus for the Jays, but adding another high K% guy would be hard to stomach. SIGN STEVE PEARCE NOW SHATKINS - the market is set.

2 things:

1. he can't play SS, nor could he play 2nd for an extended period, so he doesn't fully replace Barney/Goins.

2. Goins, Cola and Smoak don't have trade value sir. I doubt Zeke or Barney do either.

Really cause in 29 games at second he had 1.000 Fpct last year. And as a super utility player he holds more value, roster flexibility... Back ups do not play full time so, something would have had to go terribly wrong to have Barney or Goins starting too.

Goins can be placed in the minors still can he not?

Yes non of them will get you a superstar but may get you a Depth piece, pen help or a minor leaguer!

But depends if you care even for anything of that, If you get nothing more then them off the team and use the roster spots for improving the whole team.

lol

The team isn't signing JB and EE for that reason. Also, this team is now stuck with RM unless they eat a lot of money trying to trade him.

Hopefully Martin has a bounceback in 2017, and they could reduce the amount eaten in a potential trade or at least justify the salary. Good news is fangraphs Steamer is projecting 2.8 fWAR, so roughly in line with his $20M salary.

Anyway, right now it's not like they can trade him - they don't even have a decent backup in place yet, let alone someone to step in as a legit number 1. Although paying Navarro $5-6M to be the number one versus $20M for Martin would look pretty good right now, considering what you could do with that leftover $15M.

I bet they could dump Martin's contract right now and not eat any money. He's still a really good Catcher. Can't see them moving him though because in any scenario the team would be worse. Navarro is likely replacement level or worse so you lose 3 Wins and you aren't getting those wins back on the FA market.

You can't do much with $15M in free agency. That's the problem with everyone on this board who wants to just dump players. The only way to spend that money is to put it back into free agency which is the least valuable avenue to acquire players. Our team isn't going to sink because we're paying a 3 win catcher $20M. It would be like a 50/50 bet to get 3 wins out of $20M in free agency

I agree the best move here is likely no move, but his performance could continue to decline instead of the bounce back from 1.9 (in 2016) to 2.8 fWAR that Steamer is predicting. And for me it would not be a dumping, but maybe trading for a good outfielder. Although as I said, this only creates a new hole, unless they sign someone and that is not going to be cheap if you go the route of a Weiters/Ramos.

Steamer has predicted Navarro at 0.5 fWAR in 60 games / 244 PA. So maybe 1 fWAR as a #1 catcher. Would need to get someone really good for Martin for this move to make sense.

Martin likely would get a 3 year deal worth $40-45 million as a FA if he were on the market. Plus with salaries going up every year, 3/60 is probably very fair for Martin over the next 3 years as long as he stays healthy.

His horrible framing makes him a lot worse than that though.

I agree. If he stays healthy I think we get fair value from him.

No way you try and unload him, eat some money and have Navarro as an everyday catcher. Navarro isnt much better than Thole. Martin is a much better catcher in every metric, not to mention little things that are hard to quantify, such as his game calling, baseball IQ and ability to maximize a pitchers potential ie Liriano.

In 2016 he was a League average bat and put up 1.9 WAR despite being injured or banged up for the majority of the season. Hopefully he will stay healthy. Either way if Navarro is our everyday catcher, forget about making the playoffs. His poor framing is worth something like minus 1.5-2 wins per season

Martin was a big reason as to why the Blue Jays made the postseason the past two years.
