Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 It's been pretty well documented that Beltran hates being a DH and prefers playing the OF. He also hates our turf. He's not coming here. Was just going to say this.

He's not coming here. Oh yeah... I remember him being an off-season target one year and reportedly turning the Jays down before even receiving an offer.

I'd rather have him as an OF/DH over Bautista based on recent production and cost.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Steve Phillips, FWIW, was speculating Jose value has declined so much he is looking at 2/26 with an option year. Less than Beltre deal.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 At this point I'd almost prefer to just take the QO draft pick for Bautista and pursue Beltran instead. There would be no draft pick attached to him since he was traded midseason, and he'll be much cheaper while likely providing similar offense and having no qualms with DHing. He actually doesn't want to DH all the time. He also said he doesn't want to play on the Turf in Toronto. So hes not an option.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 That was like 3 years ago, he's DHed almost half his games this season. So 3 years later he will want to play on turf? The Yankees tried to talk him into full time DH. He insisted on playing the field. He was actually hurt earlier in the year and that's why he played DH. He will go somewhere that lets him play OF. Teams will live with him LF or RF to get his bat in the lineup.

Probably, but he will get a rude awakening from the market. His offensive numbers on LD% are still solid and his eye is still elite. But he has become a one dimensional pull hitter who is struggling to hit the FB as well as in the past. He might get a Beltran 3/45 ish deal to end his career, but his days in the OF have to be numbered.

He might get a Beltran 3/45 ish deal to end his career, but his days in the OF have to be numbered. Only way is if Bautista gets back and suddenly mashes down the stretch and in the Postseason. I think the max he gets right now is a 3/$45 million deal based mainly because its a weak market and there might be a desperate team thinking he can return to his elite levels if healthy. Otherwise, he'll need to take a 1 year deal around $15 million, and hope for a rebound. Even still, he'll be 37 after 2017 and it'll be tough to get a 3-4 year deal with a high AAV. To be honest, I could see a team going year-to-year with him like the Red Sox have done with Ortiz the past couple of seasons, which likely makes the most sense.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 I wonder if we might be in play for a big run at Reddick. Seems the perfect fit for us both now and in the longer term future.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Bautista's headed for a 1-year deal with incentives, with the Jays or somebody else. No chance he gets $20M.. and $15M may even be a stretch. He's no longer a premium player and should only be in the Jays plans if he'll play DH or 1B. He can't play OF anymore.. and hurts the team just playing RF or batting in a big spot in the lineup. Lake's stay will be short--Carrera is expected to be back on Tuesday, with Junior likely to be DFAd.

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 What do you think Reddick would cost? I have floated the idea of $22 per year for 5 years. over 100 million for a platoon player? Just bring back Bautista now that his value is low.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 What do you think Reddick would cost? I have floated the idea of $22 per year for 5 years. I don't see him getting that much, nor would I give that to him. I'd be good with something like 4 years/$70M, beyond that, I don't see the value.

That sounds like a really awesome idea. And we have the money to do that so its not unrealistic at all. Building is sold out everynight.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 over 100 million for a platoon player? Just bring back Bautista now that his value is low. He's a perennial 2-3 WAR player having a slightly.off year and got traded He bats left vs Upton Jr who hits right He won't be attached to draft pick compensation He's only 29 He is a positive defender He's a good fit but won't come cheap. Reasonable maybe but not cheap. He can command 4-5 years in this market.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Honest question: How many fans (hardcore vs casual) still see Jose Bautista as the face of the franchis? I probably did until about 1/3 of the way through this season. Even if he has a good September I still just don't quite see him that way anymore.

I thought Donaldson took that title away from Bautista last year.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 I thought Donaldson took that title away from Bautista last year. Well that's who I see him as now. It's hard to pinpoint exactly when that shift happened. And it migjt be different for different fans. And your best player isn't always the face of the franchise though usually is. And Donaldson has been our best player easily. Donaldson Tulo, Pillar, Martin, Sanchez, Stroman, Osuna Lots of other guys who fans love now. Not like it used to be. I don't think letting Bautista go would the PR blow anymore that it would have been say in 2013 or 2014.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 I thought Donaldson took that title away from Bautista last year. Not after Batflip. Bautista didn't become hated until after he opened his mouth in spring training.

Can you imagine? Going from a alleged 6/150 demand to a year to year at basically what you are making 2016. Wow. Baseball can be cruel. But hey...we should all have such problems. I never imagined Jose might actually TAKE a QO when this season started lol. I really hope he does come back and rake in Sept.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Lol Beltran has snubbed this organization on multiple occasions.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 It's Amazing how little loyalty the fans have these days considering how big of a part Bautista had in reviving the franchise You would think people would want him to retire in a Jays uniform. Sports is not just about numbers its also about enjoying a journey.

I probably did until about 1/3 of the way through this season. Even if he has a good September I still just don't quite see him that way anymore. Bautista has been the face of this franchise since 2010 and played a crucial role especially at a time when fan interest with the Jays was near an all-time low with them trading Doc after 2009. Even if he leaves this offseason, he is one of the best players to ever wear a Blue Jays uniform. He's up there with all the greats, and deservingly so.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 And don't kid yourselves. Josh Donaldson is going to go for $150 Million plus and it won't be with the Jays
