For the third time in as many starts, Scott Diamond held the opposition to four hits across an even seven innings as the Buffalo Bisons downed the Rochester Red Wings with a 5-2 victory at Frontier Field on Monday.

 

With a worn down bullpen behind him, the Canadian lefty walked two and punched out a pair of Red Wings while allowing a lone run. Diamond's 11th quality start lowers his ERA to 3.33 and boosts his record to 6-7.

 

Darrell Ceciliani powered the Bisons' offense by driving in three of his brothers.

 

The leadoff got Buffalo's struggling attack going with a double to begin the game. With the bases loaded and two out, Ceciliani scampered home on a wild pitch to put the Herd up 1-0 early.

 

The Bisons pushed their lead to three in the fourth inning with a couple of walks wrapped around a single to load the bags once again. Ceciliani then took an 0-2 pitch from Logan Darnell and ripped it off of the glove of third baseman Tommy Field and into left, plating both Domonic Brown and Tony Sanchez.

 

The Red Wings answered back with their only run of the game in the bottom half of the inning. The damage could have been worse, but Buffalo's outfield arms were both fast and accurate.

 

With none out in the fourth, Ceciliani took a fly ball in left that looked like a sure sacrifice fly, and fired it home on a hop to gun down Jorge Polanco. Carlos Paulino, on the next at-bat, drove a ball to the corner in right but the relay from Brown to David Adams to Andy Burns at third was perfect again and ended the inning.

 

Wilfredo Tovar lined a ball over the head of Melky Mesa to the wall in center in the eighth, but Buffalo's defense completed the 8-4-5 relay to nab the shortstop diving into third.

 

The Herd added an insurance run in the ninth as Jesus Montero drove in his 48th run of the year with a soft liner into shallow center field, cashing in Burns from third base.

 

Ryan Tepera came on in the ninth and made things a little more interesting than manager Gary Allenson would have liked. The hard-throwing closer gave up two hits and a walk to load the bases with none out.

 

Tepera then locked in to strike out slugger Adam Walker, who is only one home run shy of the International League lead, on five pitches.

 

Paulino followed up with a sac fly to make it a 5-2 contest before Buck Britton flied out Ceciliani to end the game.

 

BISONS NOTES:

Monday's effort was the first time in 16 games this season that the Herd scored more than four runs in a Scott Diamond start…Tony Sanchez has reached base safely in each of his last 19 games…Jesus Montero has had multiple hits in nine of his last 12 games…Toronto's Franklin Morales threw an inning of scoreless relief as part of his rehab…Casey Lawrence is slated to come up from Double-A New Hampshire on Tuesday to make his first start for the Bisons since April 21.

Manchester, N.H. - Jason Leblebijian snapped a 3-3 tie with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, giving the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (37-47) a 4-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (30-53) on Independence Day at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

 

Portland had some early fireworks, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning a two-out homer by Nate Freiman. Freiman leads the team in homers (8) and RBI (31), smacking a 2-2 pitch over the left-center field wall off starter Luis Santos (ND, 6.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, BB, 5 SO).

 

Mitch Atkins worked a quality start in a no-decision, yielding 3 runs on 7 hits over six innings pitched. Leblebijian put the 'Cats on the board with an RBI single in the third. Shane Opitz hit a two-out, two-run home run in the fourth to put New Hampshire in front 3-2.

 

Jake Romanski (2-for-4) tied the game in the seventh with a run-scoring double. Matt Dermody relieved Santos with one out and retired all five batters, earning his 2nd win on his 26th birthday. Chris Smith pitched a perfect ninth for his third save of the year.

 

Portland has lost seven straight on July 4th, and have lost all four in New Hampshire this season. Yoan Moncada extended his hitting streak to five games with a single to leadoff the game. Andrew Benintendi flied out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth.

 

The Sea Dogs and New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays) meet on Tuesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium with a 7:05 PM first pitch. RHP Teddy Stankiewicz (2-7, 4.99) takes the mound for Portland. RHP Jason Berken (2-7, 4.71) gets the start for New Hampshire. LANSING, Mich. - When in the course of human events the Lansing Lugnuts fell behind the Dayton Dragons in the sixth inning, 3-2, it became necessary for one people to rise up and maintain the Lugnuts' 2016 dominance over Dayton.

 

J.C. Cardenas's three-run homer capped a five-run bottom of the sixth, and the Lugnuts (8-4, 44-38) roared back to a 12-5 victory over the Dragons (3-7, 24-57) on Independence Day at Cooley Law School Stadium.

 

The victory, played before a season-high crowd of 10,639, improved the Lugnuts' record to 7-0 against the Dragons this season.

 

The Lugnuts equaled their high-water mark for most runs thanks to a complete effort from their offense: seven different players scored runs, led by Juan Tejada's three runs scored; seven different players drove in runs, led by Cardenas's three RBIs; and seven different players hit safely. The effort was keyed by a 10-for-20 performance with runners in scoring position.

 

Lansing starter Jordan Romano tossed four scoreless innings before yielding to his bullpen. Nate Abel (Win, 3-0) pitched the fifth and sixth innings, allowing three runs. Ryan Cook handled the seventh and eighth innings, plus one batter into the ninth, allowing two runs. Dan Lietz recorded the final three outs, striking out two.

 

The game featured ten different pitchers, 11 walks, 17 runs, 22 hits and 354 total pitches, lasting a season-long three hours and 32 minutes for a nine-inning game.

 

Five of the six pitchers used by the Dragons allowed runs, with reliever Mike Sullivan (Blown Save, 4; Loss, 0-2) suffering the worst of it with four runs allowed on three hits - specifically Cardenas's home run - and a walk in 1/3 inning.

 

The second game of the four-game series is a Dollar Deal Day Tuesday featuring $1 hot dogs, $1 ice cream sandwiches and $1 fountain drinks. Left-hander Tayler Saucedo (3-7, 5.28) starts at 7:05 p.m. against Dayton right-hander Austin Orewiler (2-6, 2.96). Kings 3 Stars of the Night

 

1) Matt Morgan: Morgan went 2/3 with a home run and 2 walks for the Bluefield Blue Jays.

 

2) Max Pentecost: Pentecost continued to tear the cover off the ball, going 2/4 with a double and a walk. Not including todays game, he has a 166 wRC+ over the past calendar month (.307/.380/.523).

 

3) Francisco Rios: Rios struck out 5 over 5 innings for the Dunedin Blue Jays.

1) Dalton Rodriguez: Rodriguez was terrible, walking 5 and giving up 8 hits over 5 innings for Vancouver. Honourable mention to Gabe Clark who went 0/5 with 4 strikeouts.

I'm more curious to see if they'll be semi aggressive with him and start him in Lansing next season or if they'll be cautious and have him start in Vancouver. You'd think it's a no brainer but there have been plenty times where I was convinced a player would be starting on A-ball only to see his name missing on the roster list at the beginning of the season.
