The Bisons beat the Durham Bulls 6-4 on Wednesday. A big five-run outburst by the Herd in the second inning proved to be the difference, as Roberto Hernandez picked up his third win of the year, his first decision since May 18. A dramatic moment came in the eighth, when reliever Ryan Tepera stranded the bases loaded in a two-run ballgame.

The final regular season matchup against the Bulls was a drizzly affair, but the Bisons held on to pick up their second-straight win, improving to 35-31 in 2016.

Back-to-back walks against Bulls' knuckleball starter Eddie Gamboa brought up David Adams in the bottom of the second inning. The righty laced a single into left center to give the Herd a 1-0 lead. Catcher Tony Sanchez drove in Junior Lake later in the inning, doubling the score to 2-0. With the bases loaded and Domonic Brown at the plate, a passed ball on Durham catcher J.P. Arencibia scored a third run.

After Brown struck out, Gamboa's quick outing ended, as he was replaced by Mark Sappington. Jesus Montero then knocked in a pair of runs with a single. Eight Bisons' batters reached base in the Herd's five-run second inning, as the club batted around.

"Any time we can put up a crooked number in one inning is big," manager Gary Allenson said postgame. "It started off being a real comfortable game after the second inning. It was the exact opposite at the end."

Alexi Casilla led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple, his first of the year, as he scored to make it 6-0 on a sac-fly by Dalton Pompey.

Roberto Hernandez did not allow a hit through the first three innings. The righty benefitted both from strikeouts, and a number of groundballs.

The veteran Hernandez ran into trouble in the sixth. Domonic Brown made a leaping catch in leftfield to rob Bulls' centerfielder Cameron Seitzer of extra bases to lead off the frame. However, the next hitter, Johnny Field, hit a ball over the leftfield wall for a home run, making it a 6-1 game. Hernandez got Dayron Verona to bounce into a double play with runners on the corners, ending the threat and the inning.

Hernandez tied season highs in strikeouts and innings pitched in the victory, fanning six Bulls over 6.1 innings.

"Roberto Hernandez did a very good job," Allenson said. "Looks like he got a little tired going out for the second inning. He was working ahead for the most part, got his sinker down and got some ugly swings."

Durham cut the deficit to 6-2 in the seventh, as a RBI double by Richie Shaffer knocked Hernandez out of the game. Back from a stint with the Blue Jays, switch-pitcher Pat Venditte entered and promptly served up a two-run home run to Kyle Roller. The Bisons held a 6-4 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.

Two straight walks by Venditte brought in Ryan Tepera in the eighth. After a wild pitch moved runners to second and third with no outs, Tepera struck out the next two hitters, walked Jake Goebbert, then struck out Richie Shaffer to strand the bases loaded. A scoreless ninth inning by Tepera sealed the win for the Herd.

"That's part of being in the bullpen," Tepera said of his tightrope act in the eighth inning. "Gary put his trust in me and called my name."

Tepera saved his eighth-straight save opportunity, and lowers his ERA to 3.04 on the season.

"Lately I've just been making it simple, throwing two-seams in and cutters away, and the cutter was really good today," Tepera said.

"He's matured a lot," Allenson said of his closer. "He's going to be a pretty good big league pitcher."

Mark Sappington pitched 3.0 innings in relief for Durham, allowing three hits, two walks, and one earned run. Dylan Floro entered in the fifth, before giving way to Adam Kolarek in the seventh, who pitched 2.0 scoreless innings. The Bulls' bullpen as a unit held Buffalo to just four hits and one earned run.

The Bisons are off on Thursday, and then head to Lehigh Valley to take on the IronPigs for a four-game series. First pitch on Friday is set for 7:05 from Coca-Cola Park, with Chris Leroux squaring off against Ben Lively.

BISONS NOTES:

On Wednesday, the Bisons activated left-hander Aaron Loup, who was optioned by the Blue Jays on Tuesday, and activated catcher Luis Hurtado, who last played in Triple-A in 2012 with Las Vegas… Utility man Andy Burns and reliever Chad Girodo both were recalled to the Blue Jays. Burns and Girodo both earned their first big league call-ups earlier in the season… Jesus Montero picked up two runs batted in, taking sole possession of the team lead in RBI. He was tied with Matt Dominguez with 34 coming into Wednesday… Roberto Hernandez now has four straight starts of allowing three earned runs or less… The Bisons tied their season-high with five runs in the second inning. The club last scored five in an inning on June 4 against Syracuse.

ALTOONA, PA - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats battered the Altoona Curve Wednesday night, piling up 14 hits en route to a 9-3 victory at Peoples Natural Gas Field in Altoona.

The Fisher Cats (29-35) broke the game wide open in the second inning with a five-run frame, and never trailed. Altoona (34-30) had to rely heavily on their bullpen, as their starting pitcher was chased in the fourth inning.

New Hampshire opened the scoring in the top of the first against Altoona starter Alex McRae (L, 0-2). Roemon Fields led off the game with a double to left, and moved to third on a groundout by Melky Mesa before Dwight Smith, Jr. drove Fields in on a sacrifice fly. Ryan Lavarnway then singled, and Matt Dean followed suit, putting runners at first and second. Ian Parmley sliced a single up the middle, scoring Lavarnway and giving New Hampshire a 2-0 lead.

The Fisher Cats exploded for a big inning in the top of the second. Shane Opitz drew a leadoff walk, and advanced to second on a single by Jorge Flores before Fields singled to load the bases. Mesa ripped a double up the left field line to clear the bases, and then came in on an RBI single by Smith. With one out, Parmley lofted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Smith and giving New Hampshire a 7-0 edge.

Altoona responded in the bottom of the second inning against Fisher Cats starting pitcher Jason Berken (W, 2-6). Reese McGuire knocked a one-out single, and Edwin Espinal hammered a fastball over the left-field fence for a two-run homer, trimming New Hampshire's margin to 7-2.

The Fisher Cats got back on the board in the top of the fourth. Mesa singled to lead off the frame, and Smith tripled to bring him home. After Lavarnway drew a walk, Matt Dean lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Smith and giving New Hampshire a 9-2 comfort zone. Altoona got a run in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly, but New Hampshire held on for the 9-3 win.

Berken got the win with five strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits and fanning two. Matt Dermody twirled 1.1 perfect frames with two strikeouts. Murphy Smith allowed a run on three hits over 2.2 innings, striking out four.

The Fisher Cats will try to win the rubber match Thursday evening, with righty Jeremy Gabryszwski starting for New Hampshire against Altoona righty Clay Holmes. First pitch is at 7 p.m., and Ben Gellman has the call starting at 6:45 p.m. on the Fisher Cats Radio Network.

LANSING, Mich. - Lansing Lugnuts shortstop J.C. Cardenas belted three-run homers in both games of a doubleheader, the first in a 10-1 rout of the Great Lakes Loons, and the second following a spoiled no-hit bid in a 6-3 loss on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Lugnuts (34-32) took three out of the five games played in the three-day series with the Loons (28-38).

In Game 1, starter Ryan Borucki (Win, 3-3) struck out a career high nine Loons in six dominant innings, allowing only three hits and a first-inning run. Daniel Young pitched the final frame, striking out two.

Lansing's offense jumped on Great Lakes starter Isaac Anderson (Loss, 4-3) for six runs in the first inning, capped by a Cardenas three-run big fly to right field.

The Nuts later added two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, drawing eight walks to go along with eight base hits in the game. Cardenas himself coaxed a bases-loaded walk from Loons third baseman-turned-reliever Jimy Perez in the sixth inning, giving him four RBIs in the game. Connor Panas added two walks, a HBP and three runs scored.

In Game 2, the Loons committed three errors but brought a no-hitter and a 6-0 lead to the bottom of the seventh inning, in search of the first no-hitter in franchise history.

Facing reliever Wes Helsabeck, Ryan Hissey struck out looking and Carl Wise flied out to right field. Helsabeck plunked John La Prise with his first pitch before Josh Almonte cleanly supplied the game's first hit with a line-drive single to center field.

That brought up the switch-hitting Cardenas, who had homered from the left side in Game 1. In this at-bat, batting from the right side, he lined a drive off the gray railing above the left field wall, ending Great Lakes' shutout. After a walk to Ryan Metzler, Helsabeck (Win, 2-0) struck out Jake Thomas to end the game.

All things considered, Cardenas - who had entered the day with no home runs and eight RBIs in his first 40 games of the season - finished the doubleheader by going 2-for-5 with two runs scored, two walks, two homers and seven runs batted in.

Lugnuts starter Patrick Murphy (Loss, 0-1) pitched a career high four innings-plus, allowing an Omar Estevez two-run triple in the third inning and an Ariel Sandoval two-run homer in the fifth.

The Loons added two unearned runs in the seventh against reliever Dusty Isaacs, providing a measure of insurance before the Lugnuts made their last-ditch push.

On Thursday, the West Michigan Whitecaps arrive at Cooley Law School Stadium for a four-game series to end the first half. The series opener is a 7:05 p.m. Labatt Thirsty Thursday Gone Wild: Comedy Night featuring $2 beers, half off craft brews and the brilliant entertainment of the Lansing Made Players!

Kings 3 Stars of the Night

1) Ryan Borucki: Borucki had one of the best starts of his professional career, with 9 strikeouts in 6 innings. Hopefully he can keep that going in the future!

2) Francisco Rios: Rios continued his solid season and ascent into top 5 Blue Jays prospect range going 5 innings with 6 strikeouts, 1 walk and 1 earned run given up.

3) Yorman Rodriguez: Rodriguez had a good day at the plate going 3/6 with a double, triple, a stolen base and 5 RBI.

Kings Platinum Arencibia

1) There wasn't anyone who really stood out here so I'll give a group award to Lansings offense in game 2 who went 2/26 with 11 strikeouts. Is that bad?

Roster Announcement

Vancouver Canadians roster was announced today! Their first game is on this coming Friday. I would expect to see new draftees with the team in time for their home opener next Monday. The current roster is headlined by high draftees like Smoral, Maese, Jacob Anderson, high profile IFAs like Yeltsin Gudino and Bryan Lizardo, and some sleepers like Rodrigo Orozco. T.J. Zeuch, J.B. Woodman and Zach Jackson should be among the players assigned there after they sign/for next Monday.

Finally Borucki has a great start.

Rodrigo Orozco put up some solid numbers last year. Not that young but it will be interesting to see him in Vancouver this year.

I thought he had a chance to start in Lansing this season, maybe a mid season promotion if he's playing well.

Isn't Borucki a junkballer? 88-90 FB with an average change?

His change up is a legit pitch. Plus for sure

--

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 60 | Control: 55 | Overall: 45

Borucki was diagnosed with an elbow tear during his senior year at Mundelein (Ill.) High in 2012, but the Blue Jays gambled on him in the 15th round of the Draft and lured him away from a commitment to Iowa with a $426,000 bonus. The left-hander ended up needing Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2013 season, but he pitched well the following year, logging 57 innings between Rookie-level Bluefield and Class A Short Season Vancouver. Unfortunately, injuries derailed what was supposed to be his first full campaign in 2015, when he experienced elbow soreness early in the season and was shut down in July with shoulder pain.

Borucki has showed his pre-surgery stuff when healthy, highlighted by an 88-92 mph fastball that peaks at 94 and consistently plays up due to his deceptive delivery and long arms. His changeup is a plus pitch for which he's long demonstrated feel, while his breaking ball still needs more work.

Borucki has cleaned up his delivery since being drafted and knows how to pound the zone with his entire arsenal. He has the ingredients to develop into a back-end starter, but, for now, it's more important that he stay healthy and gain experience.

I hope Smoral can at least be an effective bullpen arm.

He's a longshot to be that at this point.

I would like to see some good things from Huffman and Smith. My deep sleeper picks.

Thanks for the Canadian's roster.

Is it just my ignorance of the lower minors, or is that roster a bit underwhelming...?

I honestly don't think I've heard of any of the position players. Who should I be paying attention to? I'm going to try to get to a game next week.

Gudino, Lizardo, Javier Hernandez? That might sum it up.

Rodrigo Orozco. Athletic CF who hit well in Bluefield last season. I've always had a soft spot for Barreto as a 2B with a good hit tool. Lizardo and Gudino were both high profile IFAs. Jacob Anderson was a high draft pick back in 2011. But next week J.B. Woodman and Cavan Biggio should be there among other draftees.

That's what I was surprised by -- the lack of '16 picks. Forgot the signings aren't official yet :P

Guess I'll wait a week or two.

Thanks again guys
