TBJ12 Verified Member Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Very cool when I was in PEI I saw a bunch of them but rarely in Ontario although they are here. Always have Orioles in my backyard. Thats when I let the cat out. Are you sure your not seeing Robins? I see a lot more Blue Jays in Ontario than I do Orioles.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Yeah. Not a group whose feathers you want to ruffle. Audible groan
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Who decided that 10% of the league should be named after small songbirds, anyway?

I've seen Orioles in Ontario but they're fairly rare. My parents have about a dozen different bird feeders in their backyard and they only see Orioles once every few years.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Who decided that 10% of the league should be named after small songbirds, anyway? I always wondered why owls never get any love, or why they have that cuddly stereotype. Owls are probably the most bad ass bird of prey out there, but no one names teams after them. Hawks, Falcons, Eagles all represented. Cardinals twice. At least Blue Jays are really pretty, but Orioles?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Who decided that 10% of the league should be named after small songbirds, anyway? Considering what else we could have come up with. I'm happy its Blue Jays. People like birds.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 I continue to be astounded by how little the general population knows about common birds. I was walking through Ryerson campus the other day and a crowd of people were gathered around a tree taking pictures of a Red-Tailed Hawk eating a sparrow. None of the idiots knew what kind of bird it was. "It's an eagle." "No, it's a falcon!" f***ing retards. It's literally the most common raptor in North America, you see them virtually every day, even in the city.

Only bird of prey missing representation is the Caracara and maybe the Harrier (though they can be called Hawks).

I imagine that you wrote a bunch of code, scraped the Wikis, and made a spreadsheet to figure this out, yes?

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Actually, Toronto Owls would be pretty cool for the NBA but I'm loathe to give Aubrey any more of a face for the team. Fits with the Raptor motif too.
