Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 The biggest problem would be that the lack of motivation to cut anyone would result in giant prospect lists over time. I don't want to wade through 50 names when talking trade. I think I hate this. I don't really GAF, since I won't be the commish tracking a column 30 rows deep in the Google Doc, but it's dumn. There's no reason we should have a hard cap on MLB roster size but not MiLB. If anything I would maybe be open to expanding cut size from 20 up to 22, or something like that. I do think the DDL format is pretty much perfect as-is, though.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 Yeah, that's why the rounds would have to be reduced to 3 or 4. I don't know how well it would work in practice, but it seems at least somewhat interesting on paper. The thresholds could be lowered for mandatory promotion to help too. I'm in a hockey league that doesn't cap farms. The league has been going for 13 years. Some teams have hundreds of prospects, some of which have retired. Nobody wants to delete a guy from their control if they don't have to, on the off chance that he eventually becomes useful, and it just creates a giant mess. We'd have guys rostering the Deck McGuires of the world, and it becomes very tedious to look through the farm to find interesting guys in trade talks. I think maybe adding 1-2 spots, or adding 1-2 keepers as Dinger suggests should be the furthest we go from DDL/BBDl format. The DDL has been chugging along flawlessly for 3.5 years now.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 Having 12 prospects is great if everyone has the same strategy. But for people who want to have an amazing farm system, at the expense of the MLB club, or for those people who would rather have multiple 2nd or 3rd tier prospects instead of a handful of blue-chippers, it doesn't work. I think 25 prospects is the perfect amount. One for each spot on the roster. Nobody is going to force you to have that many, and in terms of trade, I doubt you'll be spending a lot of time checking out Deck Mcguire. Just have your trade partners highlight their more important minor league prospects if you aren't familiar with them. Generally, I don't look through every milb prospect somebody has if I'm trying to trade with them. More often, they pitch me a prospect or two.

We're not going anywhere near 500 owned prospects.

How many rounds each year in the draft for that other league? We could always include an age in the mandatory promotion to weed out some of that, or cap the minors at 20 with the reduced prospect draft rounds just to prevent someone from going nuts. The idea is obviously to increase flexibility, not insanity. As I said, I don't know if it would work or not, but I think it's an interesting discussion to have. * Agree with Dinger, 500 owned prospects is crazy. ~240 ish like we currently have makes sense, it would just be nice to be able to have more flexible distributions of them.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 Do 34 total keepers (or whatever #). Max MLB players you can keep is 22 (leaving 12 prospects). But you have flexibility and can punt a couple of MLB keeper slots for more prospect keepers, if you are rebuilding. Maybe you can keep as few as 19 MLB players if you want (so 15 prospects). Total flexibility would be iffy, but being able to shift 2 or 3 slots around in February could be cool.

Laika Community Moderator Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 It works from both ends. Presently competitive teams will like being able to keep 22 players, instead of 20. Presently rebuilding teams will like being able to keep 14 or 15 prospects, instead of 12. In the DDL, rebuilding teams tend to promote and MLB keep a couple of prospects anyway. This isn't ideal because it makes MLB teams a bit worse, so the league is a bit less competitive, and it also significantly hurts the value of those prospects.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 This is why we pay NJH the big bucks.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 If you guys need more people I'd be up for it. Not sure I'm "Elite" enough though. I've never won in any of the board leagues.

spittin Verified Member Posted December 21, 2015 Author Posted December 21, 2015 Can a mod change the thread title to "invitation" league or something, elite seems to be rubbing people the wrong way, my apologies.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 So we're up to 20+ volunteers
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 So we're up to 20+ volunteers Why don't we make it a 30 team- wait
spittin Verified Member Posted December 21, 2015 Author Posted December 21, 2015 So we're up to 20+ volunteers Well I know we'd love to see some higher ranking DDL members in, are they going to give us a yay or nay soon? *looking at njh*

At least we have 20 good guys. Maybe give them a day or something to opt in?

Maybe give them a day or something to opt in? I think establishing membership should be 100% confirmed and then we can put rules to a vote. If more than 20 are interested we can establish some sort of cutoff like playoff appearances and throw the remained in a pile a vote on the last few spots, thoughts?

Yeah definitely establish membership before voting on rules. Not sure we'll have people to vote on though. I think connorp gives us only 20 so far.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 Looks like a good mix of people but my commitment probably wouldn't be there. I'm already thinking of dropping a league or two for 2016. It's always nice to get some new names involved. You guys should think about inviting a couple of newbies, if there are any interested. I will remind you that ~75% of the BBDL were complete dynasty newbs when it started. I also feel like guys like silvergun and TRM would have flown the BJMB coop long ago if the DDL didn't exist. So it gives people a reason to frequent the place

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Maybe we should have a hidden ballot for the last 3-5 teams. There is plenty of interest it seems.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Woah... cash, that would intrigue me.
