Blue Jays assistant general manager Tony LaCava interviewed for the Angels’ GM vacancy today, reports Buster Olney of ESPN (via Twitter). LaCava has been an AGM with Toronto since 2007 and also currently holds the title vice president of baseball operations. He’s been strongly considered for GM openings in the past, and he even (reportedly) turned down an offer to become the Orioles’ GM back in 2011.

Jays should just promote AA to President of Baseball Operations and give the GM day-to-day duties to LaCava. In reality, they'd be doing their same duties, reporting up the same structure, just with inflated titles and pay. Maybe AA would take more of a hand in the Baseball $$ side of things to start to learn the business side, as Shapiro did.

It would make it interesting if LaCava gets an offer, and allows the Jays to 'match' it, ie. Give me the EVP, GM title that AA currently has, match the $ obviously, and i'll stay sort of thing. If that were to happen, who would be making that decision...Beeston? Shapiro, eventhough hes not officially in his new role yet? Rick Brace? ... Having named Shapiro, but not having him in his new role yet would make a situation like this awkward to say the least.

What has AA done to deserve a president's role? His team has been mediocre in the standings and one great second half of his walk year does not mean he deserves to be rewarded the moon.

If anything, at most, he deserves a multi year deal as a GM of a team, whether thats for the Jays or elsewhere.

He's going to need a lot more experience in order to get the President's role.

Lol if AA becomes President what will Shapiro

Clean Donaldsons jockstrap?

AA would report to Shapiro, just like he does with Beeston now. Shapiro would Liason with Ownership, Run the Business Operations, ie. Finance, Marketing, Pricing strategies and Promotions, Ballpark ops, Ballpark renovations, Community Outreach, Communications.

I don't think there would be time to be cleaning any jockstraps here.

I hope LeCava gets it.

Hes the head of our farm system I believe? I think a more analytic approach to the player development would be beneficial rather then trying to foster those toolsy types.

Maybe building the best team in baseball has something to do with it. The poster was just looking at a way to keep Lacava, it really doesn't change anyone's "role".

My guess is Lacava would rather be a GM elsewhere and have more control if given the opportunity anyway.

Good for him if he gets it. You can't keep all your front office talent with phony titles and promotions.

Maybe not, but if you look at the situation in Toronto, LaCava as GM would report to AA as President of Baseball Ops, who reports to Shapiro as President and CEO of the Blue Jays, who reports to Rick Brace, President of Rogers Media. Pretty clear cut org chart, with little interference in the Baseball operations from Ownership in the past.

vs

Situation with the Angels, LaCava as GM would report to the Team President, who Reports to the Team Chairman, who reports to the Owner Arte Moreno, who has been meddlesome in the past (Blue Jays fans may know him as the guy who made Tony Reagins trade for Vernon Wells), all the while having to deal with Mike Scoscia who has the ear of Moreno, and has allegedly already chased out one analytically minded-GM in DiPoto.

Even if its an inflated title with the Jays, and assuming he's paid GM level money in both places, whats the better situation with more say in the baseball operations? I'd pick the Jays situation, where even if you're being overruled on baseball decisions, at least its coming from baseball guys above you, and not an owner above you who has no baseball experience, or a manager below you.

Jeff Blair spoke about this on Tim and Sid yesterday, said(paraphrasing) that he interviewed with the Mariners also, and that it's just a fallback if AA doesn't get extended(Really doesn't want to leave the Jays org). He also said he expects the Jays to extend AA this upcoming homestand. *Rumour has it* FYI.

Not to be digging up an old thread, but i thought the Indians move today confirmed the direction that MLB is moving towards. President of baseball Ops is the new GM. Would seem the likely scenario for AA at end of season, assuming Shapiro isnt incompetent, which clearly his is not.

Good read
