Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2015 Author Posted August 18, 2015 "Every baseball career is full of ups and downs but let me tell you, the kid is a battler and he's only 24! He'll take this as a learning experience and come back stronger than ever." Every time Pat Tabler says "he's only going to get better," I have to drink.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I HATE listening to Barker. At least Zaun was a good player and a WS champion, Barker was a journeyman nobody... I don't want to hear his opinion on anything. Part of it is his content - but that coupled with a drawl and the fact that on TV he doesn't stop to breathe gives his voice an southern emphysema-ish derp-like sound.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2015 Author Posted August 18, 2015 so does Buck apparently. I'm impressed that Buck can even enunciate as well as he can considering how much he drinks and how many foul tips off the face he took. He's a wonder.

He's a wonder. So how real is Buck's drinking anyways? Is it just a running joke or is there more to it. I remember when I worked in radio, we had a guy who would just throw up in the garbage can as soon as he was off mike. I'm assuming it's not quite that extreme.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Tabler is the worst for that I've ever heard Tabler adds an extra syllable to every word he says

As a guy in AA 13+ years I shouldn't poke fun but he sure speaks as if he is shitfaced too often.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 My brother and I have a running joke where anytime Buck does something stupid we blame it on Buck being drunk. From what I can tell, he's usually a couple drink-poos in by the start of each game.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2015 Author Posted August 18, 2015 I'm almost 100% sure Buck drinks I once got a pre-game text from a Blue Jays intern which read, "Buck Martinez: noticeably hungover."
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 "He's got big, soft hands and strong hips. He's a baseball player. We were watching him in batting practice today and he was putting on a show." "That's right Pat, so-and-so is only one of tchew players from the East-sfksdjfls high school in Florida. And BOY, what a great program they have."
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I honestly don't mind Buck, as far as baseball announcers go he's around average to me and makes important plays sound really exciting. Tabler is terrible at his job and I don't get why he continues to be employed. Outside of a few baseball stories he literally never contributes anything of substance. The only time I enjoy Tabby is when he's inadvertently being funny with his talk of "big strong handsome men with nice soft hands."

Agree on all counts Other than occasionally yelling overexcitedly about fly balls that will be caught, and the mis-pronounciations (which are just humorous), he's actually pretty decent Tabler is awful and should have been replaced by Alan Ashby years ago. He should be replaced by Joe Siddall now.

Anybody who lived through the Jamie Campbell play-by-play years appreciates the dulcet tones and specatcular hair of Buck Martinez. It's Tabby who needs to go.

A reasonably sized minority seem to have major problems with Buck. I don't.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 A reasonably sized minority seem to have major problems with Buck. I don't. I just don't like when he wets his pants on a ball that barely makes it too the warning track. after 40 years around the sport you'd think he'd be better at that. Tabler brings down the IQ level in "homer" and that's hard to do.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Darin Fletcher was awesome, though very unorthodox and a huge homer. But when he was working games I made it a point to make sure I was watching because he was hilarious. I'd welcome listening to him. Buck annoys me with his awkwardness and he seems like the kind of guy who would sit next to you in a bar and make you feel super awkward...but after living through the Rob Faulds and Jamie Campbell years, I will not complain.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 That being said, whenever I hear Buck say "he's a baseball player" I'm amazed because I thought I was watching a hockey game.

The one that really pisses me off is "he's a professional hitter"... ORLY? Here I thought he was playing for free.
jays76 Verified Member Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Oh I also forgot "Make no mistake about it", that's one of Zaun's favorite openings to a question from JC.

Nafro Verified Member Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 He said Stroman shouldn't be a starter because he's short Zaun is a midget. He looks up to me, and I struggle to be allowed on roller coasters
Nafro Verified Member Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 That's a fair point. I think Joe Madden only made it to A ball but he seems to know the game ok. Is this Joe Madden related to John Madden?
Nafro Verified Member Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I want to here a full hour of Pat Tabler and Kevin Barker talking baseball. Just once. I listen to the radio so I can hear Jerry Howarth and Joe Siddall (and sometimes Duane Ward), instead of Buck and Tabby.
