Do you think it's a good move to claim him? Apart from the fact he's making $13M this year he seems to have pitched fine the past 3 years, good enough to justify claiming him and giving him a few starts over whoever we decide to give the #5 spot to until Sanchez returns.

Claiming would be stupid af we might as well just sign him to a minor league deal but as a flier guy there's no risk

You think everyone's gonna pass and he's gonna land in the FA pool? Cool even better lol

No one is claiming his contract or he'd have been traded by now

They'll probably outright him to AAA so I doubt he goes anywhere regardless

With all that money, E-Jax will almost certainly go to free agency, and the Cubs are going to eat most of the remaining contract (except for a pro-rated minimum when he signs with another club). Nobody's touching that $13M for 2016 and whatever's left of his 2015 salary.

I don't know too much on assignments but can't he reject his AAA assignment? Or if he passes waivers is he forcefully outrighted? I'm guessing he'll lose his $26M if he rejects the assignment.

He'll accept the assignment. Like you said he's not turning down $26m.

I think there's a rule that if a guy has enough service time, he can refuse to go to the minors without losing his contract.

I'm pretty sure you're right, and it's something like 5 or 6 years of service time.

He has nearly 10 years of service time, and his contract is guaranteed. Cubs are going to have to pay that contract.

If the player is not claimed (clears waivers), the club may option him or assign him outright to the minor leagues, though he must continue to be paid according to the terms of his contract. A player may be assigned outright to the minors only once in his career without his permission. Thereafter, he may either 1) reject the assignment and become a free agent, or 2) accept the assignment and become a free agent at the end of the season if he’s not back on the 40-man roster. Additionally, player with 3 years of major league service may refuse an outright assignment and choose to become a free agent, regardless of whether he has been sent outright to the minors previously. A player with 5 years of major league service time who refuses an outright assignment is entitled to the money due according to the terms of his contract.

You guys are right. 5 years+ can reject an assignment and still get paid his entire contract.

If he gets released he will not be signing with the Jays. I can see him signing with a city he enjoys being in

I think that if no one wants him I would see if I can get the cubs to pay 70% of his salary ( as they would have to pay 100% otherwise

If we catapulted you out of Toronto, would that make it an enjoyable enough city for MLB players?

I wouldn't mind taking a flier on him. No risk. The Toronto/Canada factor doesn't matter as he's not signing a long term contract. He will be looking for somewhere where there is a opportunity to start so it's a decent fit. Edited by jays4life19

He will look NL first then out West then probably New York etc.

He has an agent who probably will steer him away from the homerun dome

Or maybe an agent who will steer him in favour of the team where he can put up a 15+ win season just by checking in every 5 days, a la MB or Hutch.

Are the Indians still a good pick. Just waiting for the right time to buy in

Still 35-1. Honestly Jays at the same odds are probably a better bet right now. Even though I don't like the Angels at 14-1 they aren't the worst bet (currently at a 20% chance of making it to the WS)

There's no guarantee anyone will give him a guaranteed contract. Considering his control issues, and terrible numbers in recent years, he may be lucky to get a minor league deal at best.

He won't get that. He hasn't been a quality pitcher since 2011-2012.. that contract the Cubs gave him was horrible in every way.

He'll definitely get a minor league deal... The Cubs are paying his salary, so he can go wherever he thinks is his best chance to win/put up good numbers.

Also, lol at "minor league deal at best", because somehow Edwin Jackson is going to wind up pitching in indie ball this year.

Well, he's not getting a major league deal. Most teams see his poor 2013-14 numbers.. and he was a mop-up man for the Cubs. He'll have to prove himself in someone's minor league system if he wants to be back in the majors again in a meaningful role.
