ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 Not crazy about this as AA seems to have overpaid here. For example: Rangers got 879,500 from Angels for Jason Hoppe, a 23 year old, 27th rounder who hasn't pitched above short season ball. The Diamondbacks have a bunch of IFA money that they can't spend so it's not like there's a shortage of supply. We'll see how it all shakes out.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 ^ Rogers wasn't willing to pay for all this.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 (edited) The D'Backs still have to be willing to trade the cap space to us. If there's one thing AA isn't, it's unprepared. We've heard from every GM how he's always on the horn talking to everyone about everything. If there was a better option out there I'm pretty sure he would've made that deal instead. I think the real question is whether this was a better approach (getting penalized for 2016), or blowing your wad fully in 2015 with signings, keep DeJong and Locastro, and take the 2 year penalty. Seriously though, it's certainly true that the other team has to like your players and maybe Texas liked Jason Hoppe more than Chase DeJong. And maybe the D-Backs are working on other deals they like better. We'll see what happens. Edited July 4, 2015 by ElNik2013
metafour Verified Member Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 For the idiots that were under the assumption that 1 year of restriction vs. 2 years of restriction was "insignificant" because of a potential Intl Draft: Comment From KD whats the logic in the blue jays trading for slot space to reduce their intl penalty to an absence of one year as opposed to two when the system is likely to change after next year anyways? Kiley McDaniel The penalty of going over will carry over into the draft with loss of draft picks for as long as you'd be in the penalty
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Even with the loss of draft picks the strategy of going way over your bonus pool seems worth it. Getting 5-7 first round pick talent in 1 year is > than getting 3-5 first round pick talent in 3 years.
