Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Imagine if Goins can all of a sudden hit for league average, who do you guys keep? Goins or Travis? Travis because he's much better then League average offensively and good defensively
Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 I like Goins but Travis' bat really intrigues me.
nextyear Verified Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 http://www.bluejaysplus.com/ryan-goins-wonders-good-approach/ It is good to see the change in plate discipline explained statistically.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Travis because he's much better then League average offensively and good defensively He's also hurt a lot where Goins is like rubber.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 He's also hurt a lot where Goins is like rubber. so you're saying don't play the better player because he gets hurt a lot?
Followthelight Verified Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 That Dave Stieb story was awesome.
Followthelight Verified Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 He's also hurt a lot where Goins is like rubber. There is no reason to think this will be a trend.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Imagine if Goins can all of a sudden hit for league average, who do you guys keep? Goins or Travis? It's not even close....TRAVIS!!!!
nextyear Verified Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Imagine if Goins can all of a sudden hit for league average, who do you guys keep? Goins or Travis? For the past 2 months Goins has been batting above the league average. Over the period of July 3rd to August 29th, 2015, Ryan Goins has raised his wRC+ from 54 (on July 1st) to 82 (on August 29th), and over that same 2 month period Ryan Goins has a wRC+ of 137. (reference: fangraph game logs - http://www.fangraphs.com/statsd.aspx?playerid=9807&position=2B/SS ) Most likely the Blue Jays will pick a healthy Devon Travis over Ryan Goins in 2016 because of Devon Travis' superior bat (although I prefer Ryan Goins because of his better defensive abilities at 2B). However, this late in the current 2015 season even if Devon Travis was able to play by mid-Septmber I think it would be very risky to switch Goins with a rusty Devon Travis. PS: I love fangraphs. http://imageshack.com/a/img540/9289/IUqybs.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img907/7057/hmYB8U.jpg

nextyear Verified Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 So this is sustainable to you? This Goins in the past month is the new Goins now? Probably not at a wRC+ 137 but maybe wRC+ 100 over 500 plate appearances or a full season. I think he can obtain a full season wRC+ 100 because his plate discipline has changed. Swinging at well chosen balls in the strike zone may lead to a league average run production stat. The good thing about Ryan Goins is that he is willing to spend the time to learn and is smart enough to learn, an example is yesterday when Buck Martinez explained how Ryan Goins received coaching on getting a good lead-off from 1st base and then he stole his first base of the year.

Ryan Goins is not and never will be a league-average hitter. Devon Travis is clearly the better player.

This is just your emphatic opinion whereas I provided stats and Flafson provided the ESPN article - http://www.bluejaysplus.com/ryan-goins-wonders-good-approach/ . Devon Travis is the better hitter but I am not sure (yet) that he is a better overall player. However, this is my last post on this matter since neither of us can accurately predict the future.

Wow, Goins has more major league at bats telling what he is but The guy who has the superior minor and major league numbers you don't know yet? What is it about Travis you don't like? Be honest
ColdPint Verified Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 This is the most dominating baseball we will ever see. Special time for us, let's enjoy being on top of the baseball world for the first time in 23 years.

By better overall player, I mean offense and defense. And in any case, my previous posts were regarding his improved plate discipline since July 3rd, 2015 so why would I then assume that he will regress to the hitter he was in the past?
Swervin81 Verified Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Travis is so much better offensively than Goins, the gap between the two in Goins' favor comes nowhere even remotely close to making it up. Besides, it's not like Travis is a pylon, he's a solid defender in his own right. It isn't even a contest as to who the better player is.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Thank you, for changing the topic. Goins has filled in beyond my expectations. Great job. But its Travis without a doubt. lol Even after this incredible month this division is still going to come down to our remaining games against the AL East...Yanks just wont go away.

Sounds like he needs a bit of an extended rest.

I've been hoping all year that he doesn't retire, and this probably doesn't make him want to stick around.

BTS Community Moderator Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Hopefully he'll go out on top and you'll feel absolutely divided inside. Well... yeah. I never want to see him be one of those guys who hangs on as a shell of his former self.
