TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Pillar, Navarro, Valencia, Goins is not a terrible bench, in fact Goins is pretty much doing as expected at 0 war and is a good late inning defensive substitute. There is also Smoak who should be our starting 1B, Bautista's injury hasn't helped things. The problem is this season was headed this direction from game 1 when half the roster were experiments and several starters are fragile (Reyes, Saunders, arguably Bautista). The outcome was inevitable. I feel our bench players were good enough options for us it's just they haven't got to be used as bench roles. Pillar (our 4th outfielder) has been starting since the get go and Goins has played in more games than Travis. Part of having an "okay" bench is using them best in situations where they can be successful. Injuries have "forced" the Jays into bad situations...or maybe bad planning has.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 the fact that goins isn't starting at ss when paired with Reyes is mind boggling. Reyes no doubt would have a hissy fit if this occurred. I hate how baseball is the only sport that caters to ego over actual production. with that being said. Goins is a bum and should be in the minors but ffs if you have to play him with Reyes, play him at short.

I agree that if Goins must play we are better with Goins @ SS and Reyes @ 2nd. Reyes strong arm is erratic when he doesn't plant negating that +, and more balls on avg are hit to the right side. That arm isn't going to help him when he can't get to the ball. Having said that, the drama isn't worth the short term move while we wait for Travis.

But Goins need to replace Reyes in any game in the 7th inning or later if the Jays are up.
nextyear Verified Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 It is good to see Goins getting some recognition for his solid defense. Although I find the WAR stat to be over complex for baseball, here are some interesting stats for Goins from http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/30636/ryan-goins WAR (batting) +0.8 DWAR (fielding) +0.9 I would expect his real defensive contribution to greater than 0.9. For this particular stat I tend to believe the saying: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

Most people 'round these parts prefer Fangraphs fWAR to baseball-reference bWAR... fWAR has him at a nice round 0.0 on the year...
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 You're such a Boxcar. Collabello,Valencia and Carrera have as much combined fWAR as Encarnacion, Reyes and Bautista. Yes dipshit, and I'm sure we can project them to continue that going forward. genericcasualfan2015: Still a believer in Chris Shelton.

If it means almost nothing why so adamant on the switch late in games? Reyes range is awful the last few years. There is a huge difference between him and goins defensively, its sad that some don't see it.
