burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 In the article he uses Hanley as an example. Hanley has the Worst DRS of any player in 2015 and has been worse than replacement level while sporting a 114wRC+. Reyes would most likely be terrible in LF. What makes him bad at SS is his range/instincts which would probably be the case in LF as well, not to mention the increased injury risk of Reyes running around on turf half the time. I'd rather Reyes be at 2B when Goins is in the lineup but thats about it.

Despite his issues at SS a lot of posters see it as his optimum position (on any team) given his + arm strength. His strong arm is erratic with the release he uses if he doesn't plant. We don't have a replacement for him @ SS and he would resist a move to 2nd (we all hope Travis sticks regardless) or LF. Agree with you on LF...every time he runs I cringe that he might do down.

I'm not sure he would be worse at 2B because with his arm he could afford to play deeper than the average 2B. With Travis though you can't really do anything besides throw Reyes out at SS and hope he doesn't cost you the game in a crucial moment. I think if Goins and Reyes are starting a particular game though your team is better defensively with Reyes at 2B and Goins at SS. More balls are hit to SS on average so I would think the team would be better than way.

(not that I think Goins is even replacement level). I get that the arm goes to SS, but in this case I favour Reyes on the side with the lesser number of balls hit that way on avg.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Also there's nothing I hate more when people say Reyes decides where he plays. Derek Jeter I understand because he is a HOF who only ever played with the Yankees. The Blue Jays owe Reyes 22 million per season until the end of 2017, not anything else. If he played his entire career in Toronto I would say it would be different but if the Jays think he should move to CF (not actually just using it as an example) then he should have to do it. If not, then he can sit at home and not get his salary.

We are not the NYY when they were winning WS where he earned he a lot of his deity reputation and Reyes is not f***ing Jeter...not even close. The guy can be an electric player and an asset, but at this point the only thing very big about his game is his salary.

If you ask the average Jays fan they probably hate Reyes more than like him. I mean Arod moved positions, even guys like Nomar and Ripken moved off SS and they had better careers than Reyes. If a player is going to help you win games at a different position the player shouldn't have a choice. I could see Reyes being mad if he was a FA at the end of the season but the guy is already set up financially for the rest of his career.

He doesn't really have a choice...its just the drama and chaos that his resistance would cause. I can't imagine he would refuse to play...sit out...and forego the $.
