theblujay Verified Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Ok so the ump tonight was awful. Just take a look at the cluster of balls in the bottom right of the zone for Sanchez and all the low strikes called for Miley
LTR Verified Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 I wanted to go ape s*** on that ump. Particularly after that one batter that he ended up walking with 3 perfect strikes were called balls. Even Martin was giving the ump a piece of his mind.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 That was inexcusable. If I was going to go to court to prove that Roboumps were required, that's the performance I would chose to prove my case.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 I counted six in box balls for Sanchez One for Miley That discrepancy is inexcusable
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 More likely the strike zone is the result of the Jays pissing off all the umps.
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Brook Jacoby cost the Jays the season.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 I only watched until the 4th inning, but Sanchez isn't going to get borderline pitches if he can't get the ball in the zone more consistently. You can't expect an umpire to call every pitch perfectly when half of his pitches are no where near the zone.

There was the Nova at bat where he threw 3 of the 5 pitches in the strikezone and the ump called 2 of them balls

If umps can't make the correct calls, regardless of the consistency of the pitcher, they should be replaced by computers which CAN do their jobs properly. My company would be completely out of business if they operated based on the "tradition" of the transportation industry. They're a $65M/year company because they have a robust IT infrastructure (could be better if they actually listened to the f***ing IT team, but hey... We do what we can...) And the Pedroia AB in the 3rd. In which he threw 3 of 4 pitches in the zone, and Pedroia got a 4 pitch walk?

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Which shouldn't be the case either. You can't not call strikes because someone hurt your feelings. Apparently umpires get the middle school treatment. there is a lot of arrogant 13 year old ******** that has always happened in baseball because there has never been a commissioner that was willing to take on the umps union. The league has always had umps with Napoleon complex. There are some great umps, but there are a bunch of washed up wanna be umps who washed out as real athletes or were picked on in school and they are going to show who is in charge now.
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 What bothers me more then anything is that baseball doesn't seem to do anything to make Umps somewhat accountable for this nonsense.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 The issues with umpires are getting worse. They have to do something about this. Just in the last couple weeks we have seen mutiple physical altercations. The umpires have to much of an impact on the game. Lets hope the the new commish steps up. there are guys still umpiring that have been nothing short of a POS for 3 decades. West, Davidson, C.B. Bucknor, Angel Hernandez... a sea of ineptitude Davidson screwed the jays on a playoff call over 20 years ago... still sucks moose cock.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 The most BS part of the ump thing is that if it was ever implemented, I think it would change the minds of even the opposition pretty damn quickly. It wouldn't affect the enjoyment of the game to anyone. If I was heading up the umpires union, I would be getting on board with "assisted" strike calling ASAP. There will always (or at least for a long time) be a need for on-field ump to call safe/out on the bases, and a bunch of other calls on the field. If the home plate ump had a ear-piece discretely assisting balls/strikes calls, the quality would rise immediately, and the calls for change would go away (for the most part). They would keep their cushy jobs and all would be well.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Have it electronically monitored, have them wear electrified jockstrap and zap the f***ers every time they got it wrong. Bet you their zone will improve quickly.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/cache/numlocation.php-pitchSel=592717&game=gid_2015_05_08_bosmlb_tormlb_1&batterX=21&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3&league=mlb&pnf=&zlpo=&cache=1.gif The thing with that AB was that Martin was set up on the other side of the plate so Martin had to move his glove across the zone to catch that making the ump think its a bad pitch. Some umps will call a strike more based on if he hits his spots than the actual location of the baseball to some degree.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 And despite a strike zone the size of a thimble Aaron fukking Sanchez shut down the BoSux! Full props to Sanchez for ignoring this ump and have his best game ever. NOW CARRY IT OVER TO THE NEXT GAME!

polar bear Verified Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 More likely the strike zone is the result of the Jays pissing off all the umps. Exactly, with Bautista being the main culprit.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 This is all backlash from how pitch framing was sensationalized by the media at the Martin signing. The umpires have it out for him.
LTR Verified Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Martin lost a couple strikes on his pitch framing stats last night but can't blame him for that, ump went full retard.
