they gave him a start yesterday, and he's had pinch hit opportunities. It's either bats or Smoak. Who has the better numbers the last 4 years? If Bats shoulder is effecting his batting he shouldn't be in there, but if they feel it isn't materially bothering him at the plate he should be in. Smoak will play every day once Jose can play right.

Smoak cannot play any other position but DH/1B and he isn't going to usurp EE/Bautista if they need to take the role.

Last year they did that he ended up having back issues and injured himself. I know he injured himself in Oakland running hard to 1st but no need to have EE overwork in a position he wouldn't be any better than Colabello at.

Because their mindset is let an injured player take up a spot on the roster until it's painfully obvious that they need that spot, and don't have any real depth, so keep the player sitting there doing nothing on that off chance the magic health fairy makes the boo boos all better overnight rather than use the spot for a player that might contribute.

 

Of course it could also be they don't think it's bad enough for 15 days off and will get better sooner than later. But we've seen how that hasn't worked well for this club before.
