ScientificReason Verified Member Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Most teams don't have 2 WAR guys sitting around waiting for injuries. That simply isn't true (outside of Washington). Typically they have a vet who's been good in the past who cant quite crack the rotation, or they have a young prospect who's almost ready to make the jump to the majors. The Jays have Estrada's put up 1.7 WAR in 2013 and 3.2 in 2012 and they have Norris and Sanchez who fit the bill as the top prospects who are almost ready (theoretically). The Dodgers spent a zillion dollars on payroll this year and they are using Scott Baker. They Jays are no different that the VAST majority of MLB teams. Total nonsense, the dodgers also have Greinke and KErshaw, why cherry pick Scott baker?. The stats simply do not support your argument. With stroman maybe we would be 24th instead of 30th in pitching..... Many teams including dodgers, cards lose an ace and still have a solid rotation, ours was shakey with stroman now it is embarassing.

And the Yankees aren't any better, using a mediocre Chase Whitley right now until Tanaka, Capuano(who is crap BTW) or Nova returns. And the Yanks have little pitching depth in AAA SWB.. remember, they had Kyle Davies up here earlier this season after the 19 inning game!

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I don't agree starting was not an issue going into the season. Even with stroman it was not good enough. way too much reliance on guys who have not pitched an entire year in the MLB and aging vets on the decline. This team was not a serious contender with this staff. So does this mean you won't be around no moa', since, you know, the season is already ova'?
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Funny, I thought the Blue Jays's SP depth was traded to help acquire Josh Donaldson and Michael Saunders.

Raysjays, you need to calm down. People bitching and moaning in this thread about Jays's SP depth were mostly fine with dealing away SP depth to acquire Donaldson and Saunders. The point is that if they had kept Graveman, Nolin and Happ, SP depth would be pretty decent.

Plus, Nolin and Graveman weren't big prospects.. Graveman right now is not close to MLB ready, plus got lit up in AAA his last start. Nolin currently is nowhere close to a return either. The big names in that deal were Brett Lawrie(who is struggling) and Barreto (who has been abysmal in A+ ball.)
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 ^ That was a terrible deal for the Athletics. One wonders how such a smart franchise can make a move like that. Gotta give it to AA, he made two amazing deals in the off-season and yet 13-14

I guess I could say "Red Sox are 12-14" with a higher payroll and just as bad a rotation which hasn't had an injury yet, unless I'm mistaken. Anyway...

I think so too, besides how many times have we seen good early starts become meaningless late in the year I think this is the sort of team that will hit its stride around late July, Early August
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 It's not even close. We've scored 144 runs, next best is 131 But oh my God the pitching is killing us... People mourn about the pitching, but the other side of the equation is that they are doing this despite Reyes being out, EE sucking, and Bautista and Martin not really hitting but at least taking their walks. This offense was supposedly built around 5 elite guys. Only one of those five have performed at an elite level so far. This team still has the highest runs scored. That's gotta be scary for opposing teams to think about.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I feel pretty much the same in regards to the rookies, big hopes for Norris and Sanchez is where I thought he would be. Dickey always starts slow and thrives in the summer. With Hutch and Buehrle they could both be better but I'm not shocked, you always have to hold your breath every start because of their ongoing Jekyll/Hyde routine. As underwhelming as the starting rotation has been our pen has been even worse, and when both aren't clicking it's a recipe for disaster. AA rolled the dice this off season with the pen and it's coming up snakeyes, everyone could see this happening a mile away except for him apparently.. How has the pen been worse than the starting rotation? And blown saves aren't a valid measurement since the starters have blown countless early leads this year.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Funny, I thought the Blue Jays's SP depth was traded to help acquire Josh Donaldson and Michael Saunders. I really didn't care for Happ being traded at the time though Saunders did seem to fill a need. If we had all known Pillar was going to be a serviceable starter so far this year I think most of us would have preferred to keep Happ. A lot of the excitement over the deal was the thought that the salary savings would have been applied to bring in an experienced RP...there goes that idea.
Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 yeah I was not cool with the Happ trade from the get go and I hate it more now.
