Notes:

Jays:

  • One of the reasons Hutchison was named the Blue Jays' Opening Day starter was so he could also start the series finale in Baltimore. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a lot of success against the Orioles during his brief career. Last season, Hutchison faced them six times and posted a 3-1 record with a 2.54 ERA.
  • Martin is 0 for 11 since singling in his second at-bat of the season, while centerfielder Dalton Pompey is hitting just .111 (2 for 18) through five games.

Orioles:

  • Tillman is coming off a strong season debut that saw him pick up a victory over the Rays. He allowed one run on four hits -- including a home run -- and three walks with four strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.

My pre-season prediction of Gibbons being fired in May, being replaced by Hale, and then the Jays go on a huge run to make the playoffs is no longer a prediction. It's a wish. Please let it happen.

Martin hitting 7th behind Navarro lmfao.

Would be nice to win our second straight road series against a division rival. We will all be in a better mood for the home opener.

It'll be nice to finally play some games in the Rogers centre. Should get the homeruns going

So Navarro is not only in the lineup as DH, but Biggy moves Martin down in the order to accommodate his boy Navvy!

I guess it makes sense if you think he's your "best pure hitter".

Also, pretty weird that Martin went from batting 2nd to batting 7th in one week

It's probably too early to make much of it, but is he in Biggy's doghouse already?

For what motive? I have no clue.

Smoak hasn't had an off day since Opening day so it could just be a day off with a day game after a night game, who knows I wouldn't read too much into it. I'm looking forward to this one, we always hit Tillman well and it is supposed to be 16-19 degrees C at gametime, ball might fly today.

I know Martin hit .290 last year with a .400 on base but I wouldn't expect those numbers again. If he hit around .250 with a .350 on base I would be more than happy with that.

That .350 OBP would be nice hitting 2nd, but I guess 3 games was enough for Gibbons...who knows.

I'm skeptical of Martin's ability to even range within 50 points of last year's OBP, but I'm not writing him off. Martin's in slow stretch (dating back to ST, which is meaningless stat-wise, but shouldn't be ignored when it comes to performance) and Gibby is being pretty proactive in not letting Martin "work through" a slump in the valuable 2-spot at the expense of the rest of the team. I like the move. When Martin starts mashing, move him up. Easy. It's a non-issue.

Would you not agree that Martin's a better hitter than Pompey and Navarro though? Nobody is saying he's an ideal #2 hitter.

Also, four games can't constitute a "slump" (and streaks don't exist anyway).

I would say that Martin is better than both - but that's obviously the result of his career numbers, which are meaningless if Gibbons or Jacoby have spotted something in his swing that's keeping him from being effective. 4 games is not a "slump", right. But, like I said, if this four games plus the entirety of ST are enough for the coaches to see that Martin isn't entirely on point offensively, I'm fine with them making the decision to move him into a less crucial part of the order for the time being.

Pompey being in the 2-hole is the big story for me. Martin hitting *under* Navarro is a non-story, IMO. It's Gibby trying to break up the righties, really.

I unfortunately haven't had a chance to see many of the games so far this year (only the second two against the Yankees), so I don't think I have any particular insight into Martin's situation. What I'm really saying is that I like Gibby's willingness to tinker with this already strong lineup to try an eke out every advantage.

any other major off season signing and it could become a clubhouse issue

martin too professional for that

even so, Gibbons needs to be careful

Did you pass this along to Gibby and AA
