baloojayz Verified Member Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Just so awesome the Bluejays pulled off all these moves before the winter meetings. It seems every year, when we wait and expect nothing comes of it. Now all we need is some small pieces, the rest is still available via FA. A little torn on the whole SP debate, I am against going after an ace, BUT by not re-signing Melky and non-tendering the bunch and signing Smoak so cheap, saves us a lot of money. You add the fact that we probably wont be trading for top end SP via trade to save our prospect pool and the fact we passed on scrubs like Erwin Santana last yr and we already lost the 1st for Martin...oh and that the Yanks and Baltimore are probably going to make some moves here....I think it is about as perfect an opportunity as the Jays are ever gonna get.

We didn't pass on Erwin Santana he passed on us. We were about to sign him and he changed his mind when a spot opened on the braves.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 If Ervin Santana hadn't signed with the Braves we might not have had Stroman emerge. Keep that in mind

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 "Alex Anthopolous completes a 30 team deal in which he acquired the rights to the 2015 and 2016 world series titles in exchange for 4 15th round draft picks from 2094-2098. Since standard draft picks aren't tradeable, he was forced to bend Bud Selig over a table and mercilessly spank him until he agreed to change the rules. Bud Selig was the one who suggested this..."
BallsDeep Verified Member Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Im just curious as to why some people say they are "against getting an ace"? Would you rather shell out the money on relief arms that fluctuate year after year?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 (edited) I'd be happy if he gets one deal pulled off next week - SP, RP or 2B Relievers can be bought at a later date and he won't be bidding on the biggest money/name guys anyway so I'd like the focus to be on SP and 2B. G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Love this time of year! Yeah winter meetings are fun Though less so when every other team is making stuff happen and we aren't That said I do like how AA tries to get some stuff done before the winter meetings start. Some years he does, some years he doesn't of course. This year he sure has.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Getting Josh Donaldson was like the Christmas present so f'n good that you don't even ask for it cause you don't think you'd ever ever get it and you don't want to be disappointed. LOL

Would you rather shell out the money on relief arms that fluctuate year after year? I'd rather have five solid pitchers and 3 slightly below average arms ready to take over in the event of injury/fatigue. We don't need any thirty-year-olds signed to $100 million contracts that take us into 2019. Reyes and Martin will weigh us down enough then.
Jonzo Verified Member Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 He also said that he wouldn't trade any starting pitching depth, and then proceeded to trade Happ two days later. I'm really expecting AA to lose 30 lbs. Less souvlaki/tziki, more deals.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I'm not really expecting AA to pull anything off during the meetings. He's said himself on numerous occasions that he hates the meetings as a place to do business. It's so chaotic, usually with agents setting up meetings here there and everywhere, people trying to use others as leverage...it's a real s*** storm. I'm thinking more than he'll use the meetings to advance some discussions that have already started and maybe try to line up other possibilities that he'll try to finalize once the meetings conclude. ...but I could be completely wrong. No you're probably exactly right He probably has a short list of free agents he'd like to sign and one of those could get done this week though

Cause no way he's in on Lester or Scherzer and not *all* that likely on Shields although it's possible. One of those earlier guys on a short deal would be phenomenal and we added a LF on the cheap to replace Melky. Edited December 5, 2014 by G-Snarls

I've heard the same. The trades that do come from the meetings will be interesting to see if solely for the domino effect that I'm sure will involve us. Really it's Lester who's got to be signed first then market will develop for Schrezer and Shields. Positional players I fully expect Matt Kemp to be moved in by the end of the meetings.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Orioles are sure taking some heat for their off season so far Odds that they do something catastrophically stupid next week??
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I would bet that Navarro get dealt next week.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 The winter meetings are a bloated anachronism from a pre Internet world. There are way more efficient ways for teams to share information now than forcing everyone into a hotel. From what I understand, the hotel where they host it is immense anyways and the teams aren't even forced into close proximity. The whole thing is full of impromptu journalists and lickspittles trying to get into the industry. I can't blame AA for not liking it. You probably can't get into an elevator without some twerp looking to network making a pitch at you and/or someone trying to pump you for information. It's probably a living hell.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I would bet that Navarro get dealt next week. Could Navarro get us an half decent BP arm - like a guy with only 1 year of control left???
BallsDeep Verified Member Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Trading for relievers is what Alex likes to do best anyways lol. Just please not another Ben Fransisco.

Jonzo Verified Member Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Could Navarro get us an half decent BP arm - like a guy with only 1 year of control left??? That's what I would suspect. Clearly AA needs to address the bullpen ASAP, and Navarro could be used by many teams. Question is, what kind of BP arm could we get back..
