My knowledge is limited. Please bare with me.

OK but isn't melky to saunders a step down in class? Or am I getting that wrong?

I hear defensively Saunders offers more (correct me if I'm wrong). But don't you lose offense from Melky's bat? (correct me if I'm wrong)

I'm lead to believe that saunders is a more dynamic player and is faster etc. But isn't melky a better batter?

Is it the case that 1) It's a step down, but the money saved going Saunders over Melky is much better or 2) Saunders is genuinely a better player than Melky.

Disappointed to hear that Jays are chipping in for Happ. In my limited knowledge I thought that part of the positive of this trade was freeing up money.

What's the down-low with the cash? What actually was saved? Also does the idea that jays are paying for Happ change anyone's opinion on the deal or devalue it?

Well think of it as Navarro and Happ for Saunders. That still is a pretty good trade.

For next year, I would bet that Melky is a better hitter than saunders. However, Melky is a few years older and is kinda fat, if he's looking for a 5+ year deal then I don't trust his body to hold up well on the latter half of the contract. Saunders, while an injury risk, is at least an athletic player and much cheaper. There stands to reason that in a couple years that Saunders will be a better player than Melky, let alone worth more value if Saunders makes say 2.9 million this year and progresses to 5 million before he hits free agency.

Plus he's Canadian, that adds an automatic 2 WAR on PR.

Thanks for the info. Basically my post is very much "I'm willing to believe this is awesome, but I'm not smart enough with baseball to understand why. Please reassure me."

Heard people says this guys a bit of a colby Rasmus? please no?

I can see why some people compare him to Rasmus, but keep in mind Saunders is significantly cheaper than what Melky would have cost us, younger, better defender, and probably better power moving forward. Right now Melky is the better overall hitter but Saunders is the better defender. I wouldn't be surprised to see Saunders out perform Melky overall as soon as this coming season. Assuming he can stay healthy.

Personally, I like the deal even with cash involved. Saunders has some upside, is far better defensively and there is a chance that he could put up better numbers (with the exception of average, I'd suspect) than Melky starting next season. Melky is sort of a 1 tool guy, he hits for average, plus he's not a guy I envision aging particularly well. Saunders will undoubtedly fare much better playing 50% of his games @ the Dome than he did in Safeco as well.

In what way have you heard he's like Rasmus?

Its probably due to the 25.5% career K rate and the fact that he hits lefty.

How about bringing back Morrow to battle for Happ's starting spot, at a reduced salary of course? I like guys like Beachy and Medlen as well.

I'd prefer him as a reliever, but who knows.

Signing a McCarthy or Liriano would be my preference for SP, but they might be out of the Jays' price range.

Why would Morrow, who is trying to rebuild his value, choose to pitch in the AL East or the Rogers Centre. Its time to do away with these guys. AA traded a lot of the team injury reserve this offseason, needs to continue down that line.

Very true re trying to rebuild his value. He'll probably sign with an NL team or with a team like Oakland (once they trade some of their SP depth).

I was suggesting him at a reduced $alary which would make it a more worthwhile risk for the Jays instead of the 10M option they declined.

Again, you're right though, he'll end up at a pitcher's park.

Because Martin is catching and the team looks to be pretty good?
