Jesse Winker, Reds. It might seem like a cop-out to go with the guy who won the batting title, but so be it. He also finished second in on-base percentage and slugging, which combined gave him a league-best .999 OPS. Scouts also mentioned the Dodgers' Corey Seager, the Yankees' Greg Bird and Eddie Rosario of the Twins.

Bird received the most votes among players, with Rosario also receiving a fair amount of support.

Power

Steven Moya, Tigers. There was some debate over raw vs. game power on this one. Moya wins the raw power vote, and he did finish tied for third in homers and fourth in SLG. He also struck out 29 times in 90 at-bats, leaving concerns about his ability to make enough contact to tap into that power.

In terms of game power, Bird and the Padres' Hunter Renfroe, who tied for the home run title, received kudos, as did D-backs catcher Peter O'Brien.

Among players, Bird and fellow Yankee Aaron Judge led the way, with O'Brien and then Renfroe not too far behind.

 

Speed

Roman Quinn, Phillies. This is a near unanimous decision as every scout mentioned Quinn. He also received more player votes for this tool than any other player at any other tool. He also led the AFL with 14 steals (in 16 tries).

The Cardinals' C.J. McElroy was also given an 80 on the 20-80 scouting scale, as was Byron Buxton. Mallex Smith of the Padres and Blue Jays outfielder Dalton Pompey received multiple votes from players.

 

Outfield arm

Aaron Judge, Yankees. One scout said it's a true 70 arm. Renfroe, Buxton and the Braves' Edward Salcedo also received nods. Judge also received the most player votes, with the Royals' Bubba Starling coming in second. Renfroe finished third.

 

Best infield arm

Justin O'Conner, Rays. Catchers have been included and people couldn't say enough about O'Conner's gun from behind the plate. He also received the highest player vote tally. In terms of non-catching infielders, the Royals' Hunter Dozier and the Angels' Kaleb Cowart, a pair of third basemen, received attention for their arms.

 

Outfield defense

Dalton Pompey, Blue Jays. Buxton and Rusney Castillo of the Red Sox also were mentioned. One scout said that Quinn could get the nod in terms of future potential, considering he just returned to the outfield after beginning his pro career as a shortstop. Players certainly noticed Quinn's defense, as he was the top vote-getter in this category.

 

Infield defense

Francisco Lindor, Indians. Lindor was mentioned by more scouts and players than anyone, making him the runaway choice as a plus defender ready to play shortstop in the big leagues now. Deven Marrero also received high marks for his glove work, as did Austin Nola of the Marlins and the Royals' Raul Adalberto Mondesi.

 

Pitcher

Mark Appel, Astros. This is more of an overall, complete picture category than an individual tool and it's hard to argue that anyone was consistently better than Appel, who righted the ship after an up-and-down first full season. He had two not-so-great starts. In the other five, he gave up one earned run. Total. The hitting-friendly AFL hit just .167 against him. The Pirates' Tyler Glasnow was mentioned, more for his higher upside than for his performance this fall. Player votes on pitchers were widely varied, but Appel and Glasnow led the way.

 

Fastball

Nefi Ogando, Phillies. There were several relievers who hit triple digits this fall, but Ogando was noticed and mentioned by many as someone who was consistently 100 mph or better. Enrique Burgos of the D-backs, Francellis Montas of the White Sox and the Cardinals' Sam Tuivailala all got 80s as fastball grades. The Pirates' Glasnow wasn't touching 100 mph, but among those who are believed to be long-term starters, his heater was favored the most. Tuivailala, Ogando and Glasnow were the top three player vote-getters.

 

Breaking ball

Tyler Glasnow, Pirates. There were many favorites, both from scouts and players, but Glasnow's curve -- labeled as double-plus by one scout -- was outstanding. Perhaps more impressive is that he was working on throwing it for strikes early in counts, so it stood out even while he was throwing it at times he wasn't comfortable. The Cubs' C.J. Edwards' curve, Cardinals right-hander Tyrell Jenkins' slider, as well as sliders seen from Burgos and Appel, also stuck in people's minds. Glasnow's breaker clearly buckled a few players' knees, as he received the most votes from his peers.

 

Changeup

Sean Nolin, Blue Jays. One scout mentioned that good changeups were in short supply in the AFL this year, but Nolin's stood out. The lefty struck out seven in his last start, with his offspeed stuff working quite well. Take out one awful start (1 1/3 IP, 4 H, 4 ER) and Nolin allowed just six runs on 16 hits in 21 IP (2.57 ERA). Brewers lefty Wei-Chung Wang was mentioned by scouts and players alike for his changeup, and Astros southpaw reliever Mitch Lambson received multiple player votes as well.

 

Control

Wei-Chung Wang, Brewers. Not only did multiple scouts mention him, but Wang received more player votes for best control than any pitcher received for any other category. The stats certainly back it up: The southpaw walked only two in 23 IP. Anthony DeSclafani was mentioned by a couple of scouts, though one said it's more control than command within the strike zone.

I wanted a top flight pitcher and was leaving for Vegas. I'm not a big believer in Puig long term and didn't have the time to haggle...if I did I would have fought to keep Winker out of the deal though. I still have him in my two cash leagues though.

As depth or a 5th starter somewhere, but I think is best and most likely fit is a LOOGY.

 

Chances are, barring any stupidity on the part of management, Nolin will get an opportunity to start next year, when Dickey gets injured or Happ gets a venereal infection.
